No argument there,...but the film; along with Hicks and Carlin, helped define my distaste for blind consumerism.
I do all my consuming with eyes wide open.
The Book is ruined since I saw the movie first.
The film precipitated me to reading Choke, Lullaby, Invisible Monsters, Rant and Pygmy. I enjoyed all of them.

First third of the movie is really good, but the throughline is too surface level for my taste.
I much prefer Little Miss Sunshine for that vein of social examination... Though I haven't watched either in years, actually.

This right here.
My main takeaway from that movie wasn't all that anarchist, destroy society crap. It was the scenes where they talk about the ridiculous consumerist crap that most of America are obsessed with. That shit was all 100% dead-on-balls accurate.

Of course, the fact that Chucky P fans do exactly the same thing with his books is the funniest part. And that's the rub, you know? How do you tell society that you're not a consumer? You buy the books from the guy who tells you you're not a consumer. You watch the Hollywood movie that rallies against consumerism. You buy it on DVD. And Blu-Ray. And so on.

Starsuckers which they just put on Netflix talks about all this too... Basically we have a hardwired need to form groups of people like us and do what they do and buy what they have in order to survive... BE LIKE THE ALPHA MONKEY!!!

Totally. I used to give my wife shit about the whole keep-up-with-the-Jones's consumer whore bullshit that she falls for all the time. Until I realized I do the same shit with music gear.

lol. yah. i got over the whole I'M DIFFERENT thing pretty early. i think i'm a pretty normal person with normal tastes. i may have followed some of those tastes (violent/oddly sexual themed movies, genres of musics) that i've obsessed over so maybe i've gotten into a little more than the average person, but there's MILLIONS of other people that have too. else it wouldn't exist n
i like things. i like to own things. the concept of things owning you is vaild and something to be careful of, but most people that would fall into that would with something else anyways. religion as a crutch not a faith, a controlling partner, a dom they sub for that's always changing up the safe word without telling them.....
i lurb the flocking experiments they did. can't be arses to find the article right now but it was generally a large enough group of people if not told what to do would start physically following someone that would walk confidentially in a direction. whether they knew them or not.

One of my psych teachers did something similar just for teh lulz. Basically he and a couple of his friends stood outside some building for a little while, and people started lining up behind them without asking them what they were waiting for. Then the professor et al just walked off.
The issue with consumerism isn't people buying things. Things are awesome. My UPS and USPS people know me by name. The problem is that people feel compelled to constantly buy new things, and they constantly want things for cheaper. For example, all the cheap "fast fashion" clothing stores push new trends and styles and shit all the time to keep people buying whatever's hawt that week. And since they've adopted this price oriented approach, the consumer has no emotional attachment to the $15 pair of bright yellow jeans they bought last week, so they'll buy the blue leopard this week and the metallic silver next week.
Meanwhile, the guys here who buy new pedals almost every week aren't doing it just because they're cheap or "hyped". There's a specific purpose and potential staying power with every purchase. Put pretty much anything up in BST for $20, and I'll buy it to try and hopefully love the shit out of. It's that desire for an emotional attachment that keeps us safe from being mindless consumer whores.

Actually, I thought A Scanner Darkly was a pretty accurate adaptation.
