 I got a SM58 because that's all I've ever used and because I can always use it as a hammer if this recording thing doesn't work out :thumb:

SM58's are Vocal Mics (the #1 live vocal/rap mic, it's what LL COOL J has tatted on his arm), a SM57 is a more all around general use Mic... If you are getting weirdness with the 58 you should get a 57... :thumb:

Yeah, the 58 is basically the industry standard live vocal mic. You can throw that thing across the room and it will still work. The 57 is generally used more for instruments. Works great on drums (snare & toms) and guitar cabs. But, that isn't to say that a 58 won't be fine for what you want. Both are really great all-around mics and with a little EQing you can make either sound great in any situation.

I'm not gonna be recording at very loud volumes, and I want to record vocals, too, so the SM58 seemed like a good choice. I know theres a *lot* that goes into mics and stuff, but I went simple for my first purchase (at least, in awhile, but I've been mic-less for years)

Aren't the 57 and 58 pretty similar though, aside from the caps?

i always tell you guys get a (vintage) Shure 545 for micing guitar cabs. Is super cheap and sounds great. (Squier Mascis -> Ghost Dizzy -> Distortion+ -> London City Super Amp -> 4x12 w/ V30)

The SM57 and SM58 both have a very distinct color. The SM58 is "the rap sound" in a nutshell. The SM57 is middy, even muddy at times...but doubles as a hammer or black-jack in a pinch...and will probably outlast you.

If you're ready to step up the mic game...

"Hypercardioid dynamic mic, can handle very high SPL. Useful for snare drum, freak high-SPL situations where you still need good midrange clarity. If the SM57 were a microphone, it would sound like this." -Steve Albini, on the Beyerdynamic m201

Might have one in transit soon enough...
