There suppose to be pretty close, but I guess some of the values are different. I've also read on the internets of people who own both and say the sound difference is negligible. Like most muffs.

I built a GGG tuned muff, sounds good. The tone knob is usable all over the place. CCW is awesome and thick, and CW is nice and synthy.

The BlueBeard is really one of my favorite Muffs. It's very versatile. It's not as crazily crushing as I though it was gonna be, but it sounds great throughout the entire range of the controls. Stellar.

The Bluebeard is my favourite fuzz of all time.
The little time it's seen use on guitar, it had more mids than a muff and had a sweet low end.
It's pretty much a perfect muff(for me).
It doesn't get really muddy or too thin.
But yeah, a GGG tuned muff should give you a good idea.

I would take a Bluebeard over a GGG muff any day, the Bluebeard's reputation and lack of cosmetic flash make my weapon of choice.

I don't want to step on anyone's toes but the problem w saying the GGG kit is the same is that I came to JD 10+ years ago w info from Alfonso Hermida who helped me clone pedal zero. JD Sleep (GGG) was originally going to just etch the PCBs for me but he builds pedals for other companies and we prototyped a few and after discussions of tantalum vs metal stack we started doing them and they were in such demand no one wanted to wait for the paint to dry. I kept things bare chassis because I felt if things weren't pro on the outside people would be wary of a homemade build so I wanted auto paint, anodized or chrome. After about 60 pedals were in use it made no sense to sell something that looked different than what the customer's friend that had recommended to them owned. My biggest supporter was Wino who I was roadie-ing w in The Hidden Hand so when a dude from Sunn o))) says "I want one of those" he doesn't want to see a new jack version. Also at the time a lot of blooz lawyers would buy pedals based on fancy painting and I didn't want to deal w those cats.....these decisions often led people to the conclusion it was just a kit.

Every few years ill type something up and it gets misquoted.
I had a sickening time of it when I discovered that JD had posted more than I would prefer of the recipe for the Bluebeard and named it the GGG I saw other people talking of basing designs off the GGG and I had slowed working w JD because of some QC issues that were minor and I was working in education full time. Well my experience was less sickening because on many boards my customers came to my defense and I felt like Care Bears on the inside.....

-I have always been transparent about outsourcing the early bluebeards.
-I recognize no difference between boutique, homemade and DIY as far as terms for what I do now.
-Was there any difference between me hiring my experienced friend Kevin to build as opposed to outsource?
-this is the first time I have disclosed certain parts of this because I didn't want to have a bruhahhah about JD build when he was/is in the business of building for other companies. He is my friend and he helped me start this and what was supposed to be a pedal for me, the Hidden Hand and a few other friends is available to hundreds. In the 90's I met Mike Matthews who explained to me why all the vintage muffs sounded different. There were buckets of mixed values for many components so the soup was always flavored differently.
I borrowed/cloned/stole a specific Lamb's head muff circuit and when I went to JD with my problem we arrived at the solution to post the small clairifying phrase. I was bummed he did it, but I knew he never meant any ill will and if I have a wait list then why should I be bothered. I got bummed when GGG derived pedals came out but again who am I to gatekeep a borrowed design. It's not like its MY circuit like Alan's Megalith. When I have the world's best customers why should I change anything? Why should I misinform people in hopes of dissuading people from "cracking the code"
I've never hooped my boards but I'm not going to hold someone's hand who says (I get this email every few months)

But I guess what I want to say is that building pedals isnt paint by number it's important to use your ears and be true to what you like and I want to encourage anyone with an interest to do so. Try everything you can to marrow down what you want to try to build and go build it. I did and I'm a happy dude who gets to stay at home w three kids and get 4 hours of sleep. I am over my GAS so I am building more instead of bst so....hugs y'all and I will answer any and all questions.

Ps the quality of my customers is why I started adding a tone control bypass at no addition charge, like hey y'all would you rather have a paint job or a unicorn evicerator switch.

By timing all this I've screwed up our walk but we are going to eat cookies and watch Chloe's Closet so ... Smell ya later!

On to the thread's concerns - I had a friend who can actually play guitar go through the Bluebeard with my tascam interface. I'll see if I can get some clips from it that are passable.

BOOM. SG standard. My buddy would probably feel really embarrassed about this but psh. "Newer" Bluebeard with tone bypass. Can't remember when or if the tone was engaged or disengaged for this short clip but it should give you and idea anyway. Was just messing with tone/ distortion controls the whole time.
