Re: GAS - let's get on the couch!
My friend told me to consult him on whether or not he should buy the new Lord of the Rings Lego sets. I asked him if he had the money, and he said he'd soon have plenty.
SO, then, I explained the concept of "pedge" to him, and told him to just buy one, but buy the biggest one. And, of course, the small one that attaches to it. But, no more, because, due to the concept of pedge, one must make an irresponsible purchase if and only if 1)it's really incredibly irresponsible, and 2)it's awesome enough to justify it. He went through a period of his life where he bought all of the star wars legos, and he was able to relate to pedge by realizing "The Millenium Falcon was pedge, the rest were not."
I'm so proud.

Precedent. Without it we're all scared as fook.
"There is more stress now days than before for a working/schooling person... I definitely need this 2metre LED TV and $150 cable subscription to wank off to instead of some shitty pixelated amateur Ukranian internet porn (which I'll be watching on my iPad 5.0 anyway)".
"I wish we had amazing $400 Squiers in my day--so now I'll buy five in six different colours."
Also if you think about it the word genre is a euphemism for "trying too fucking hard to be a unique little butterfly"... "needs more muscles/metal" (lame.), "needs softer vocals" (lame.), "needs a slower beat" (lame.), "needs a faster beat" (euro lame.), "needs infinite decayyyyy" (lamest)... not too dissimilar from thinking you have the right to own anything and everything.
I DON'T NEED SHIT.

Re: GAS - let's get on the couch!
I'm necroing this thread because I have found one more thing that makes me GAS.
It's this forum - haha. You probably all know it, but it's been very apparent to me lately as I am trying to save some money and sell some stuff.
Examples: I don't play Doom, my Doom band is a joke, we never rehearse, but still I get attracted to every Fuzz that says DOOM somewhere in the description. For example the Creepy Fingers OD I am trying to sell now. It is an AMAZING pedal for the heavies, does great dooms and Melvins-like stuff. I like that kind of music, but I don't play it in a band, nearly never at home - why am I buying pedals for that kind of sound? Another thing: Telecasters. I don't particularly like them, the ones I have played were nice enough but I never got blown away by one. And I don't think they look very good. Still I click on the link when it says Telecaster for cheap.

What about you guys, is there something you always want to buy and end up reselling all the time because it doesn't work for you at all?

I buy new pedals, gear, noise boxes because I am constantly blown away by the design, sounds, craftsmanship that go into these crazy little boxes. I have a great life, awesome wife, 2 amazing kids, own my home, car is paid off etc etc. I Just love having crazy gear and sounds lying around and when my kids get older they will have all of this amazing then vintage gear to play with and maybe sell if they want to pay for college.

I bought another Second Voice and got rid of it because I realized I sold it for a reason the second time. Same goes for the El Cap, I had two of those. I just need to realize I got rid of things the first time for a reason

Re: GAS - let's get on the couch!
My GAS lately has been more about tools that would make my life easier rather than things that would be cool to have.
For instance, do I need a new amp? No, but a lighter amp would be great when I want to bike to a bandmate's place rather than have him pick me up.
Do I need a new guitar? No, but it would be like the new amp and I don't have to worry about it getting beat up.
Now, do I need a new fuzz? No. Pretty much just no. But I built one and don't have anything better to spend my money on...
Okay, I lied. Just because shiny.

Re: GAS - let's get on the couch!
For me it stems from my childhood. I grew up very poor, like eating-rotten-food-because-it's-the-only-food kind of poor. And when we, as a family, were really sick of being too poor to buy food or anything, when we did have money we'd buy some fast food or whatever to spite the situation we were in.
So, whenever I'm unhappy with my life, or myself, or my music I look for something to make me happy to spite everything; and gear often does this. If I'm happy with myself and my life I find I never even log onto the forums, or look for that thing.
That elusive thing that's going to let me combine the elements sonic creation at my disposal into a golden sound that will lift me out of whatever depression I'm in. Or that thing that's going to make me forget why I'm depressed in the first place.

Re: GAS - let's get on the couch!
I was quite the repeat offender. I've been through so many Soda Meisers, US Fuzzes. Phantom Octaves, and Blue Box's it's not even funny. At least in the cases of most of those pedals, it was just a matter of "been there/done it". I've also owned 4 Small Stones, which offer deep, rich phasing. But that fuckin' volume drop- I cannot compromise mah loudz

Re: GAS - let's get on the couch!
on reflection, a lot of the GAS i've gone through in recent years was because i was trying to accumulate guitars that gave me all the sounds i thought i might possibly need. having gone through that, i know now what works for me (odd-sized acoustics, humbuckers, Strats, FH(fx), EQD) and what doesn't (Teles, Rickenbackers, phasers, oscillating fuzz).
