In Chicago alot of those adds are also for studio musicians. One of my friends had a guy he found on CL play drums on his demo, it sounded really good. But it's also Chicago, hopefully 1 out of 8 million people can help you out.
My area's fantastic if you're over age 40 and are looking for either a metal or Robert Plant tribute band. Saw some guy the other day who wanted a female vocalist for a shoegaze project and it was amazing. I wanted to wish him luck but the ad was already gone. Anything non-metal or blooz is rare.

I recently talked to a couple that moved to my area (not the exact town, but close by) and they told stories about how whenever they met someone who played "experimental, psychedelic, or noise" music, it ended up being a jam band. I concurred. Luckily, things are shaping up a little bit. No offense if you're into jam bands.
everything on CL in Santa Cruz is rock bands looking for bass players, kids looking for folks for their metal bands, bluegrassers, and reggae bands. lots and lots of reggae bands. i've seen about two ads worth answering in the last year.
