Ask a Coquette owner anything!

Post by bob the r0bot »

Hey bros and broettes,
I just got my Coquette in today and I love it, but instead of writing up a wall of text gushing about the thing, I'm going to let you guys tell me what you want to hear about it.

If there is anything about these guys that has you curious, don't hesitate to ask.

How does the size/shape/weight of the guitar feel? What would your compare it to?

Using my jaguar as the bench mark: the body is on the smaller side, but not so much that it feels like a toy. It also avoids a lot of the problems that smaller bodies tend to produce: it's perfectly balanced, no neck dive at all; the thing projects like a motherfucker, and it has the same sound and response as a lot of bigger guitars.
The shape looks like it would be a touch uncomfortable, but it is not at all: it sits really well when sitting down and the un-contoured shoulder doesn't bite your arm. Standing up the weight is perfect. Like I said before, it balances perfectly and has enough weight to it that it feels solid without putting a strain on your back.

Here's a comparison shot:

That is a really cool picture comparing the two!
If I may interject something to that observation:
While relative body size is easy to compare there are a couple other things to consider. If you were to set the guitars side-by-side BUT line up the bridges then you'd really get an idea of the differences.
By comparing relative bridge locations you see how much extra body sits behind the bridge on a jag.
You also see where the lef contour is, and you see the strap button locations which serve as your balance points.
Not saying one is better COUGH COUGH but just illuminating the differences and what those differences mean in the practical terms.
The Coquette can get away with being that much lighter weight (while still retaining balance) because of the strap button positions.
The socialite is just a teensy bit less perfect balance-wise (but not even close to SG imbalance) because the upper horn is shaved back.
I am really glad you are diggin it so much!

This is good. I like small bodies, but don't want a guitar so thin/light that it feels (or sounds!) Like a toy. My reference point is Tele/ASAT, so I don't think this would feel like too much of a change, though I was wondering from looking at pics if I would find the wings to almost feel too wide. I think the Jag picture show the coquette to be smaller than I thought (in a good way). Thanks!

Firstly, this thing has sustain in spades; I was actually surprised at how much it had at that body size.

I'm not really sure what to compare it to tonally, but I can do my best to describe it:
It's very present, but not trebley. The bass plentiful and warm, but doesn't get smudgy. The treble is nice and snappy without being sharp and overpowering; it also balances perfectly with the bass.

If you held a gun to my head, I'd say it was like a mellower (sorta) Black Penguin. It's really flexible though and saying "like x but y" will never do it justice.

Side note: I think I remember Bobby saying that there will be an official demo video of the Coquette soon.

I haven't really noticed much twang, I'm sure you can get some out of it though.
