I changed my strings from the factory .013-.065 to Ernie Ball .013-.072 the nut broke mid practice at the first string (the slot seemed big enough to handle the bigger gauge... guess not )
is this something I can just glue back into place, or should I get a new one? Should I get a pro to fix it and make me a proper nut? Nut Width: 1.650” this is the guitar in question http://www.fender.com/products/blacktop ... No=0148700
Lol I did this to my regular bt jazzy using baritone strings. Fortunately it hasn't caused me any problems somehow, but I do plan on getting it replaced someday.

Cutting a new bone nut actually isn't very hard to do. I got two bone blanks from my local luthier for only $10 (getting two is a good idea, I fucked up the first one). Just use your current nut as a rough guide on how to cut it, and prepare to spend a fair bit of time and energy sanding it down to size. Actual nut files are damned expensive, but I just bought a set of welding tip cleaners at Canadian Tire http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/6/Tools/WeldingSoldering/AccessoriesRodsWire/PRD~0588130P/Tip+Cleaner.jsp?locale=en and they worked just fine. I'm going to replace the nuts on a couple of my other guitars at some point too, just haven't had the time lately.
you should get a proper nut but you can totz super glue that shit in the meantime.

Troof!
When you do decide to replace it, you should check out these: http://www.graphtech.com/products.html?SubCategoryID=4 Get the closest one for what you need and widen the slots to fit your strings. They also sell unslotted nuts if you want to start from scratch. The TUSQ is easier to work with than bone and you can even widen the slot using an old wound string as a file.
You might get more info/help if you have this topic moved from General to the Guitar, Tech or DIY section.
