You know, I remember a couple of times in the past (when I was about that kid's age) that I was playing some really noisy stuff, and my mom came in and, instead of belittling me, actually said "... are you doing something important? 'Cause that's kind of annoying." Which I replied to by chuckling and turning down the amp.

One time, when I had a Whammy pedal, I was playing with some really high pitched stuff (and I was using a slide... heh), and my dad came in with a bottle of WD40 and said "You're squeaking really bad." Which I found hilarious.

Maybe I'm completely blind to the plight of parents these days, but it really doesn't seem to me that it's appropriate to rant at your son about how much of a loser he is when you just want him to turn down the amp or study harder (which seems like it could be part of her frustration).

i guess i see the situation differently than many of you. for one thing, i'm far enough removed from adolescence that i don't automatically sympathize with the kid in a kid/parent conflict any more...

Heh, all I can say is that I'm super glad that my mom forced me to go and choose an instrument to learn when I was a teen, and then supported me, and still supports me in my endeavors as a musician today.

i'm sorry, but that's one of the dumbest things i've read in a while.

can you honestly say every 18 year old has the resources to go out, find an apartment (presumably without the help or references of his/her parents), find a job that would pay an 18 year old enough to afford said apartment plus utilities plus food and transportation, and support his/herself realistically?

who says every 18 year old is entitled to their own apartment, or to support themselves "realistically"? they can have roommates, or live with their gf/bfs, and live like young people do, which is to say hand to mouth rather than in a middle-class lifestyle they've done nothing to create for themselves. is the expectation now that people will leech off their parents until they can find equivalent accomodation on their own? and why on earth would you want to do that? i was out of my parents' house before i was 17.
