The United Nations understands that "persons performing military service may develop conscientious objections". :idk:

I guess that means that you can choose to become a conscientious objector while still on active duty. Or at least philosophically, someone who desires to be a soldier at one point is not always a soldier. Either way, it's very vague (admittedly didn't check the link just going on your quote, there may be more to it).

This.
How does a rich mans spare change thrown at a vet make you the profiteer? That itself is even irrelevant, seeing as the people who make decisions obviously will profit most.
P.S. It's called a draft, it sucks, but it's there. You can be called into the military.

A. Rich or not doesn't change that if you are getting paid to participate in "war" you are therefore...
B. That is called the way of the world for them most part since "history" began...
C. They [rich mans, powerful mans ect mans] do not want that for that would lead to HUGE protests, take a look at the Vietnam protests... look at protest from the last 12 years... shit would go down. Also my Dad is a Vietnam vet [drafted] he has quite a bit of hatred to the the government and military, he really supports conscientious objectors.

Idaho is weird. I like the areas north of Sandpoint (and Sandpoint itself) but it's a lot of dirt bike riddin good ol boys tearin up the mountain side and ruining the peace on their mechanized toys.

There is an awful lot of Cali transplants too,...some of them are cool,...most of them are dicks.

Hayden sorta gets a bad rap for being where the Aryan Nations were headquartered.

Couer D'alene is sort of a resort town and there are a lot of yuppies that go there,...but the surrounding city is kinda blah. Great Canoeing on Wolf Lodge Creek.

I can't really speak of Boise/Southern Idaho,...cept to say that a lot of good bands I wanna see play Boise and skip Spokane (Seriously WTF?)

Also,...in case you didn't know Washington grows more potatoes per capita then Idaho,....so OCCUPY THAT FUCKERS!!!!

It's all about the geography; Boise is on the road relatively speaking between Nevada and Oregon and Washington state, as well as getting options for Salt Lake, Missoula etc if you go east. Spokane is a pain in the ass to get to thanks to the lay of the land, it's through Boise and up and over with nothing to show for it or all the way to Montana, up, and back over.

Boise and S Idaho are radically different; SE ID is more Mormon than Mormonville, Napoleon Dynamite wasn't kidding. I like it here but I'd have hated it if I was twenty years younger.

They make their money from war. If the government didn't need to use the military to wage war, they wouldn't pay soldiers to fight them/provide infrastructure for the people doing the fighting/fly the drones/occupy other countries/so on and so forth.

They literally get paid for waging war and/or being prepared to do so. You might say, they profit from war. You might call that being a "war profiteer," if you jive with grammar.

I'm not so hard line that you can't convince me otherwise, if you feel up to explaining to me why I'm incorrect.

Or did I step on your wee Texas toesies about God and Country and all that silly bullshit? :p

If you want to ignore the fact that your choice of the word "profiteer," which is loaded with negative connotation, makes it clear that you are just trying to be an asshole:

1. Soldiers get paid and receive benefits whether or not a war is currently being warred
2. Government will always hire and train soldiers so as to maintain a standing force for defense
3. Thus, soldiers reap no benefit from the existence of a war other than the risk of life and limb. In the event of a war they actually experience a net loss of utility equal to the chance that they will be injured/killed times the value they place on body part x/their life.

Dude, I've exhausted enough good will in this thread already. I don't want to burn anymore.

I'm tempted just redirect you to the last few posts I've made, rather than retreading points from a few pages ago.

However, that smiley at the end makes it pretty clear you're also one to indulge in assholish behavior. So:

The government hires soldiers because, in your words, they want to "maintain a standing force of defense."
There's problem #1--people are getting paid for their readiness to enter into armed conflict (i.e. war, though I suppose you could also tack on "interventions" and "liberations" in there). Therefore, people are making money (in other words, profiting, in other words "profiteering") from the continued use of force by our National Defense*, otherwise known as war--though since you seem to be splitting hairs, we could say the possibility of war or the perceived impossibility of avoiding war.

So, while soldiers themselves run risk of injury, death, PTSD, when actually engaged in arm conflict, they're making their living off of war (as defined above). I've known several military peeps who never saw a lick of combat in their 20 years of active duty. They've definitely profited off of war.

*Although, really, that line is almost entirely bullshit. In the last hundred plus years we've invaded or "intervened" or "fucked with" in 14 countries. Sometimes at the behest of businesses (Hawaii, Panama), sometimes because of ideology (Cuba, Chile), very rarely for "defense."

I still think you have them confused with Black Water. If that's who you meant then I agree with you completely!

wsas3 wrote:Well what did you mean? Do you mean you don't want them to protest for you or you don't have the same ideals?

I meant that my ideals are just about as opposite as it is possible to be. If I were the kind of person that felt offended by things I'd be offended that they claim to be protesting on my behalf.

I was going to try to give a lengthy explanation before, but I suppose it can be left at that.

jfrey, I'm actually curious as to what you see as "morally wrong" with these protests. This thread has had its share of grumpy old men and devil's advocates, but to have someone genuinely opposed to it does cause me to want to see it through your eyes. I do believe that people will have their own motives for jumpy on the wagon (or pitching tents in this scenario), and the selfish/ignorant attitudes of those around us can put a bad taste in our mouths, but what about all this makes you feel like what they are fighting for is wrong. I hope you don't see this as me trying to bait you, I really do want to know how you feel about all this. Just a couple bros talking about things that matter (other than fuzz, which obviously matters most!)

edit: I will admit, I didn't hear a whole lot about this movement, until a few weeks ago, other than what my buddy had to say when things started stirring up in Milwaukee a month or two back. That's a big reason why I stopped by here, because even though I don't always agree with what people have to say around here, ILF is probably the most open minded online community I am a part of, so I did want to know what your opinions are on the matter.

Damn, I wasted a whole morning getting caught up on this thread. I need to visit the General Discussion forum more often.
My opinion on all this is nothing will ever change unless we can somehow put an end to corporate lobbying.
