When's the last time you saw a BOUTIQUE POWER SUPPLY?! So hella.

Oinky, why don't you just get multiple?

This is so bitchin. Definitely excited to see this thing develop. Gonna have to pick one up at some point... I've been looking for an excuse to build up a mini-board. :duck:

Power supply prototype! I'm gonna get some small ceramic caps instead of films. They'd be better at this task anyhow, and won't be all bunchin' up on eachother. I'll have it in a box and all wired up tomorow-- still waiting on the enclosures. Graphics are ready too! I'm just not revealing them yet. : p

IM not exactly sure what RECOM part your using but aren't their converters already regulated? do you really need a DC/DC converter that is regulated re- regulated by the linears?

Or is it because there is no 5V to 9V step up part? (in this case i would not go with these parts, they are not efficient anyways + if they are outputing say 12v your losing another (Iout*3V) watts over each linear so your overall efficiency is even worse than whatever the recom part is.

I would suggest that its cheaper + way more efficient to go with a discrete switching regulator in a boost configuration (if your insisting on 5V in). (The recoms are likely just boost converters in a nice package so if you think your avoiding switching regulators by using them...)

Also this way you can easily deliver way more current per output. National probably has some and i know TI has 8 pin dip packages capable of up to .75 A per output. look for ones with adjustable output so you can get it right to 9v. Do some part browsing or search other forums to see what people are using, im sure you will find something way way way better for this application and then really be able to offer something quite nice.

edit:
Here is one from national http://www.national.com/ds/LM/LM2587.pdf (comes in through hole 5 pin TO-220)
and heres probably a more sophisticated but less output boost converter from TI available in 8 pin diphttp://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/mc33063a.pdf

The Recom parts are isolated DC/DC converters, not just switching regulators. They do make a 9V regulated, isolated DC/DC converter, but its size made it awkward to use in the 1590A enclosures. And the price was twice as high-- so it ends up being slightly cheaper to use a separate switching regulator.

The problem with the parts you listed is the external components required, and the fact they aren't isolated. I looked into parts from other manufacturers as well, and settled on the Recom because of their price and size. They're smaller than a DIP8 (though taller, obviously). I'm probably going to ditch the linear regulators for a switching regulator as well to increase the output current and efficiency, but the limitations are largely in the isolated DC/DC converters. They just get large and expensive.

More than regular DC Brick parts it needs a digest users manual of the features with a few examples with laptop and the frying pan connected

McSpunckle wrote:One more fun feature-- since it uses a 5V DC supply, you can use the Team Tesla to power a few pedals with your laptop for wireless power! You'll want to limit it to two outputs, probably, but it's a pretty neat thing when you're out and about!

THIS sounds crazy awesome.

If you look at the figure 7 or 8 on the national data sheet it _is_ isolated and uses only 8 parts per output. Thats only 3 more than you are using now per output and im sure you can find small enough xfmrs. Mount the TO-220s on the case = more room for xfmrs anyways no? -> bigger xfmrs = more current per output.

They're finally available in Europe, still a few weeks off in the States. A hang up with the powder coat I hear, go figure...

So I saw the Team Teslas are going to have 150 ma outs now? That's good news.
Should have my Catalinbread Manx sold tonight so I can buy one the minute they're available :!!!:

For now I'll use it in conjunction with my DC Brick since I have 10+ pedals on my board.

If you're doing that, you might as well post a dc brick, pp2, etc

You could use a daisy chain to power more than 1 pedal on an output. Most fuzz pedals are >20mA (mostly depending on how much the builder likes bright LEDs), so you could run at least 7 or so on one output. Alas, that's not a very neat solution. Which is why I tried to make these things as small and cheap as possible. : D

But yeah, I've increased the output current to 150mA. Efficiency (output power/input power) is at 70% at full load ... could be higher, but I wanted to keep linear regulators on the output to make sure noise stays at a minimum. And, you know... it does seem like simple transistor circuits (that are most sensitive to power supply noise) hum just a bit less when compared with the 1Spot.

The increase in power isn't costing me any extra money, so it won't cost you any extra either.

Very true, daisy chaining my fuzz together would probably allow me to not have to use the Brick anymore :thumb:

Which means I could maybe squeeze an extra pedal on my board!
