I've have Undertow and Opiate and listen to them regularly. I don't really pay a whole lot of attention to the gear famous people use. Wasn't Paul using a 400+ back then? Seems like a lot of his grind was a combo of the Ricky and a sweaty tube amp.
I actually almost bought a Ricky locally. An old lady was selling her deceased husband's 70's 4001 (a white one) for like $150 (Steal of the fucking century). That shit went quick!!!! I emailed her and never got a response so I'm assuming that someone was on it like stink on a dog's ass.
Speaking of Paul d'Amour's rig,...I'd love to have me an old Ovation Magnum....
There is just something appealing about these funky old basses. I know Paul had and used one for a bit; or at least I think he did.
Yeah, he was using a 400+, so I'm sure that contributed to the beefy tone. The Magnum is a fucking pretty bass. Paul used it only on their first couple runs of shows, but he did cut the live tracks on Opiate with it.

I can't ever envision a time in my life where I'll be able to drop over a grand on any piece of gear. Unless I literally sell off ALL of my pedals to fund one.

scary!

But I find some ideas more fun then others
