DIY PVC Guitar Stand

Postby Gunner Recall » Tue May 03, 2011 6:25 pm

Decided to start a fun DIY-ish project, a 7-Guitar stand made of PVC.
I was frustrated by the options available online...you either get a road worthy tank sized case for $$$$$ or a flimsy flatpack stand (also $$$ considering what you get for you pay).

This one can be customized with extra padding and extra supports on the cheap.

I'm using the plans found here (adjusted for 2 extra guitars, I can give you the changes you need to make if you want to do the bigger one)

This one is pretty good just because he gives you a few closeups at different angles if you need help visualizing. Note this one lacks the middle bar.

Just wondering if anyone here has done of these before? Maybe you want to start one now :thumb:
Go ahead, I'll wait here while you run off to the hardware store :hello:

Just got back from the store, since the stand is all pcb and connecters it's fairly cheap.
I skipped the caps...they were a buck a piece at the store, the caps would have cost half of what the whole project did
Might add them in the end if I can find cheaper ones.

Everything I'll need:

I bought extra insulation just in case since I was extended the original plans...if there is enough left over I''ll make a thread for a DIY pool noodle/foam insulation girlfriend

I'm going to build something like this soon, but out of some furniture-grade pine I've got, and route the boards so they all fit together like a big puzzle. Glue, varnish, and viola! furniture!

You got the right thing for cutting PVC. Congrats! That'll save you a ton of time and make nice clean cuts.

Update 2:

Pipe cut to length! You're right about the cutters mathias, they work great...I strongly suggest them to anyone looking to do this.

Dry construction run. Just checking everything for fit.

That's it for tonight...I glued up half of the base but got bored and gave it a rest :p

Cool! I kind of want one, but at the same time I think a few single/double guitar ones would work better for me, than one big one.

May need to do this, right now I'm putting 2 each on single guitar stands.

Cool, you guys should start one!
Back to the mines soon.

DIY tip: don't wipe your nose with pvc glue on your hand. Must have had a glob on the back of my hand that I didn't see.

Day 2:

Glued up and padded:

The extra 6foot section of insulation I bought came in handy, added some extra padding.
Sadly I only had about 3 or inches left over, not really enough for a poolnoodle girlfriend (or is it :surprise: )

Letting everything sit for a few hours before I toss any weight on it :thumb:

If I didn't already have one of these in purchased metal form, I'd so do this.

I think thats cool that you did that but my only concern is how solid it is and the price. my gut tells me to do it out of wood or hang them all on the wall on individual hangars. I guess if you dont have tools than this is your only option. its gotta be over $50 total in pvc and stuff. thats about what it would cost me in wood.
