somebody check me on this, but it looks like what you've got there is two pairs of 8-ohm speakers wired in series and then combined in parallel. 2 x 8 ohms in series = 4 ohms; two 4 ohm pairs in parallel = 8 ohms. the second jack allows you to run a line to another cabinet. so, an 8-ohm cabinet.

Two 8 ohm speakers in parallel is 4 ohms. Two 4 ohm speakers in parallel is 2 ohms.

Two 8 ohm speakers in series is 16 ohms. Two 4 ohm speakers in series is 8 ohms.

Guys I think I goofed up. Looking at the second pic again, it looks like these are 16 ohm speakers. Does the wiring mean it's a 16 ohm cab?

Sorry for link, can't seem to embed:

Can’t follow the wiring path in the pic and don’t know what’s up with the jacks. So mainly :idk:

Typical mono wiring in a 412 is to combine series and parallel wiring to get to the same impedance for all four as for a single speaker. Typical stereo wiring for 16 ohm speakers would be to run parallel pairs to get to 8 ohms per pair, then do something clever to put those pairs in series for a 16 ohm mono out. And I’m assuming left/right split. But I’m not seeing what looks like parallel wiring in top and bottom speaker on each side. Very odd. That suggests 32 ohm per set.

But you can roughly verify impedance with the resistance reading of a multimeter. I’d expect about 25.6 ohms to correspond to 32 ohm impedance, 12.8 to 16, 6.4 to 8, and 3.2 to 4.

What make/model is the cab? Is the second jack original or a mod?

It's a Peavey MS412 with Celestion speakers. As far as I know, it's all original... if I'm not mistaken, it's possible to use both input jacks and run the cab "stereo" (but I'm not sure about that).

What is the difference between a semi solid and semi hollow bodied guitar?

I have some old patch cables that have oxidation (?) on the shaft... I'm not sure what it is, the metal finish is dull. Don't worry about it? Clean them up (how?)

They were with an unclean pedal I guess.

Deoxit?

In this case I use fine steel wool and isopropyl alcohol afterwards. But I would like to hear if there is a better way to get rid of the corrosion/oxidation.

Anyone else done much with amplified violin family instruments? I've started playing viola through a few pedals in a band, and it sounds great and is fun but when recording recently I had seriously annoying feedback issues. I can deal with a bit of feedback, it's noisy music, but this was at the point where wasn't even possible to play unless standing in a very specific spot, rather than a fun amount I can fight against and work with and bring in when I want it.

I'm using a dirt cheap piezo pickup into a preamp, the EQ on the preamp helps dial out some feedback frequencies in the lows and super highs which aren't needed anyway, but when it's bad it gets to the point where I'm cutting out so much it's either quiet or sounds terrible.

I'm in another band with a guy who uses a viola with a similar in principle but more expensive piezo pickup and an LR baggs preamp. Sounds good and he doesn't get loads of feedback. But I'm just wondering what the fuzzy people on here might know about this, before I start dropping a bunch of money on stuff. Won't take much for the electronics to cost more than my viola
