In other modular news, I looooove Rings. Currently have it patched with chronoblob and a bit of modulation to make a fun sounding drumkit with a varying beat out of a single pulse

I think what got me riled up was "steep learning curve." I'm so tired of people making modular out to be this super difficult thing to get into. You know what else has a steep learning curve? Guitar yet every chad on the block can shred.

Oh I didn't mean to suggest I think the steep learning curve thing is true. I just found it funny and appreciated the joke.

counterpoint, though: with an instrument, you just get an instrument. You can get a shitty guitar or a really nice guitar, but it's a guitar. It will make guitar noises.
Synths in general, and modular in particular, is not at all like that. Especially if you don't have an idea of what you want. So you get a lot of people that just buy the same shit and make the same "nice sounds", which is boring.

Some music is bad, some music is good. I don't care for Metasonix naming conventions (ASS FUCK, etc.) but would pay top dollar for a D-1000.

Pretty much this exactly. I've long suspected that Metasonix is actually run by a 14 year old boy, but I would love to try out a D1000mr. sound boy king wrote:Some music is bad, some music is good. I don't care for Metasonix naming conventions (ASS FUCK, etc.) but would pay top dollar for a D-1000.

Also people, if you look up Metasonix now, which I did yesterday for the first time in years. The designs + names are more tasteful.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
I'd argue every beginner guitarist starts out sounding the same having worked at a guitar center for four years. Also boring is the issue here, its not for your entertainment sometimes. some people are just documenting their progress and ideas. Not everyone is a content creator, some people aren't seeking fame. A dude with a company that has its own subreddit talking down to youtube members with 100 subscribers is 15 year old shit like mentioned above. Virtually everyone makes boring shit when they pick up something new. Making new and exciting music isn't the only goal of making music.D.o.S. wrote: So you get a lot of people that just buy the same shit and make the same "nice sounds", which is boring.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
Of course there are. Didn't you get the memo, everything sucks.
But to follow the argument through. Making 'nice sounds' on a guitar requires a significant amount more deliberate effort and practice than buying the right modules to sound nice on autopilot. That's not a value judgement on either being better or worse than the other, it's just... a fact.

Exactly which proves my other point that modular is not difficult and the people who say it is have their head up their ass.coldbrightsunlight wrote:Of course there are. Didn't you get the memo, everything sucks.

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
Yes. I'm not actually arguing with you in substance at all.
Again, not actually endorsing the original post as a fully coherent viewpoint. But I still found it a funny salty joke on the proliferation of similar sounds we've got now. Same way I might joke about knobs demo pedals that are autopilot for sounds that are cool in demos but not in music

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
I get you. Thank you all for engaging me on this, I've definitely needed to rant about this aspect of modular culture for a minute.
Back on modular modular things. What filters are y'all using, I'm having so much fun with Three sisters, its my favorite module, and I want to add another filter. I have a Forbidden Planet and it's a bit lackluster. Something to get me into Hainbach practices but isn't over $500 like every module in his test equipment case?

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
Three sisters looks amazing - definitely on the liiist if I ever expand. Currently I'm using the filter in my Mother 32 and just the FXDF for in-rack filtration. It works for me.
But yeah theoretically I'd like to go back to having a movable filter in my rack... just no room
I do not know this Hainbach. Will investigate

Re: Can we talk about modular synths?
Oh word, this is the video I am referring to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwxI7IkCeaI
Yeah Three Sisters is rad, I get caught wanting to use it as an oscillator then I'll add another part to the patch and wanting a second three sisters to use as a filter/mixer. I might just get a second three sisters lol.
