Re: JHS be JHSin
While I can empathise with Josh Scotts passion for effect pedals - clearly, noone can deny he loves the things - he is a lamen in the land of experts.
I get that he appreciates Lovetone pedals a lot, and this is just a nod to one of his favourites, but he could have had the respect to even let Coggins know. As was stated elsewhere, Coggins works with Thorpy now and this might well impact on a later fuzz release of theirs. While I dont have any time for whinging about clones - lets face it, anything analog, the building blocks are all long since designed, and now the innovation comes from incremental improvements or versatilities - Lovetone is a very revered company in that they did actually do something fresh and cool at a time when boutique didnt exist. For that I think some people would hold them in slightly higher esteem.
At this point I should recognise that I dont have cognitive dissonance and did build some Lovetone clones for people. Much like JHS I was a hack, with a genuine fondness for the things.
Having said that I did converse with Dan Coggins and while I didnt get his approval I was able to discuss it with him, and take on board his criticisms and concerns, especially in some Fonts I had used. Needless to say my endeavours were more of the self-funding DIY hobby rather than mass release of (one assumes) SMD constructed offshore.
As an aside, I found Thorpys upset over the Muffroom/Fallout Cloud almost laughable - "his" version of the big muff should be sacred? Said who.
Anyway, rant over.
JHS: anyone that knows their stuff can see he is a likeable lamen with a bit of marketing skill. And thats not a criticism per se, but lets not pretend the guy is Joel Korte.

Re: JHS be JHSin
I know this stuff is old hat, but with all the youtube vids JHS is putting out these days, they seem to be more on the radar than ever before...and the discussion seems to be getting revived.
Whilst I missed all the original drama of the copying and all the mud slinging (and the deeper you dig, the more the facts get muddied up by opinions), I'm curious if all of the folks into the JHS cancel culture (there's another term that came out of nowhere and is now everywhere) are that way across the board? Like if you find out a friend posted a racist tweet 15 years ago, do you cut them out of your life? Have you destroyed all your Kevin Spacey movies or <insert disgraced celeb and their art>? Do you rail about the death of the environment while sipping beer out of a single use plastic cup and flicking your cigarette butt onto the floor? Have you turned your back on everyone still faithful to the catholic church (who covers for and protects pedophiles)?
I get that as a culture we are all into being outraged very easily, and people can literally ruin their lives with one dumb tweet...but are there really no more second chances? Is there no room to make mistakes or evolve as a person? I mean it isn't like the guy is spilling chemicals into your drinking water supply...he's copying pedals and selling them for more. While the real model is to typically copy and sell for less, this one should be up to the consumer to spot out. This stuff seemed to have happened a while ago and these days, JHS seems to have good will with the more public builder community doing collabs and promoting each others work...sure they might be feigning civility, but if people were really pissed, they wouldn't tow the line.
I dunno, it all seems so hypocritical to throw judgement around in the way that we do these days. Just about everyone lives in a glass house, so why all the stone throwing? It only makes it worse when your skeletons get exposed. You rail on JHS, but do you have any behringer products? Do you shop at home depot or walmart (yeah, those guys are the kings of pricing out the competition while also driving down quality in goods). I'm not defending anyone's behavior, I'm just suggesting that you look carefully at what lines really constitute unforgivable behavior. Even a murderer goes to jail and after some time is let out back into the real world.

I'm not sure where this rant is coming from but if you're referencing the 'Hey Everyone' thread keep in mind it's only two people giving praise to his youtube channel, not his products. I'm not speaking for the other person giving praise, but I am one of them, and I think the guy is a twat... I'm just enjoying his channel. And if you are concerned about two people praising the content of a channel, you should look at their post count and % of posts in what threads. I know the majority of my posts are in a thread called "Soy Boys Electric Boogaloo". So take any of my "expertise" with a grain of salt.Gigahearts_FX wrote:Anyway, rant over.

Also, you shouldn't feel bad about the what... maybe 20 [tops] clones a year you made of lovetone? I hold lovepenis is high esteem too but any time someone starts arguing about fonts, it's time to tap out of an argument

Re: JHS be JHSin
the thing about "cancelling JHS" (if you must) is that my objection to them is the funding of the homophobic Christian orgs overseas, and i've seen nothing to indicate that this is untrue or that he/they've acted to mitigate the damage. as such, i'm not going to support them. though i wouldn't say "no" to a used Colorbox for hella cheap. the relative accuracy of the Devi vs. JHS stuff is irrelevant to this, which IMO is the central question. i wouldn't shop at Hobby Lobby, either, and i quit going to Chik-Fil-A.

Re: JHS be JHSin
I find your points on cancel culture are sort of irrelevant, over-dramatic, and grossly over-estimate the power of "cancelling" JHS. No matter what folks like me say or don't buy, he is not losing anything. JHS has a stable and dedicated fan base that will buy whatever unoriginal box they want to release.cosmicevan wrote: I get that as a culture we are all into being outraged very easily, and people can literally ruin their lives with one dumb tweet...but are there really no more second chances? I could give a hoot about them cloning pedals. And I think you are misinterpreting why certain folks dislike JHS. We all have clones of some sort in our collections. I for one am a big fan of Earthbound Audio for example. Josh has just been outwardly homophobic in the name of religion in the past and I don't support that. He has turned around a little since then or so I have heard... but even if he somehow convinced me he's changed to be more open I'm not interested in buying their pedals in the first place. In a market where there are infinite options to get a big muff clone, I'd rather not buy from the dude who said some bad shit years ago.
Also the "muddled copying" instance you mention was JHS selling a clone of the Devi Ever Hyperion (a pedal made by a much smaller, woman owned company) for double the price. This used to be Devi's forum and no matter how far removed she is from it, or how much she has burned her bridges with us... the Hyperion/Astro Fuzz instance happened when she was still a big part of this forum. And thus left a really bad impression of JHS early on. When your first impression of JHS is "they ripped off a still in production pedal my friend was making and sold it for double the price" there are countless other companies to go for the same product.

this. too many kind and decent people working hard, trying to innovate. why give a money to a lazy bigot, a peddler of copied rectangles, who built himself up pandering to goddamn rich white sunday morning church guitarists. even if he sold to *just* those players, he'd probably be richer than most people would ever be.Ghost Hip wrote: In a market where there are infinite options to get a big muff clone, I'd rather not buy from the dude who said some bad shit years ago.

I'd only buy a JHS pedal if they cloned the space station, otherwise their stuff never piqued my interest. Question is: who will they copy next? Every time I see that guy interviewing other pedal builders I keep thinking "will they be next?"

Well.... yeah? I don't support that sort of thing at all.cosmicevan wrote:Have you turned your back on everyone still faithful to the catholic church (who covers for and protects pedophiles)?
I think your argument is pretty weak here - I sparingly drive a car when I have to but that doesn't mean I can't be concerned about the plight of the environment. I haven't scrutinized every musician I listen to for shitty behavior with a fine tooth comb but I try to be aware of it, however I went and saw Motley Crue a few years ago and those dudes are undeniably super shitty. I basically stopped buying black metal records because everyone is a fucking racist edgelord - but does that mean I have to stop enjoying my old Emperor records (yes, I know the drummer killed a guy! it was really bad!!) from time to time?
Holding people accountable for shitty behavior does not require you to be morally perfect - but that also doesn't mean people can't learn/change/grow. I have no need to ever buy a JHS pedal because he simply does not make things I care about, but I have watched his show and enjoyed it - however in the back of my mind I will never forget that at some point he was accused of being involved in a really shitty church that did really shitty things.
I mean our prime minister has been accused of wearing BLACKFACE - was I going to vote Liberal? Not a fucking chance but like... cancel culture isn't really this huge deal the right make it out to be where "your life can be ruined with one tweet". Usually it's about holding people accountable and it doesn't even work "with one tweet". If you get fired because Antifa reports to your boss that YOU ARE A FUCKING NAZI I have zero sympathy for you! Being a Nazi is fucking awful and you're a garbage piece of trash and in this day and age where everyone is so divided you go that route... I have no empathy for you at all. It's 2019. Be a better person! Am I perfect? Doubtful! but I can say this with sincerity!

Re: JHS be JHSin
The joke writes itself here, as JHS often pays other, more experienced builders to do the heavy lifting for their more technologically inclined offerings. However, attempting to copy the Space Station code would be fruitless at best, especially since it was built on an outdated proprietary DSP code that couldn't be easily converted a la today's SPIN chips. It can, however, be copied to the EPROM in the same series' set, which is why the XP ALL versions pop up for sale. But keep in mind, the OG behaved more like a rack unit (with all the quirks and pecadillos you could imagine), though some of those presets were gold.Confuzzled wrote:I'd only buy a JHS pedal if they cloned the space station, otherwise their stuff never piqued my interest. Anyway, the punchline is that something like that would cost crazy money to build, research & develop (which JHS certainly has), but they would never see the value for something like that to their core customer base (lettuce prey).
If smothering the bad vibes with endless hours of mediocre/middle-of-the-road content is what people what, then by all means let 'em have itcosmicevan wrote:I know this stuff is old hat, but with all the youtube vids JHS is putting out these days, they seem to be more on the radar than ever before...and the discussion seems to be getting revived.
