Vinyl Collectors Club (no but really, let's talk vinyl)

Postby Jwar » Tue May 07, 2019 9:34 am

Hey guys! So in the last year or more something came over me where I wanted to start listening to vinyl again. A lot of it came out of listening to Trent Reznor talk about the physical experience of music being gone with having just digital shit (funny since he works for Apple...but anywho lol).

So, I've started collection vinyl again after not really buying any since like, fuck 98 I think? Something stupid like that. I did buy a few here and there over the years but not seriously. Like I have some ILF homie vinyls (Aen and Brian) and a few other things.

What do you collect? Do you have weird requirements for purchases? Do you care about color vinyl or limited stuff or do you just buy black because that's cheaper and who cares? How often do you buy?

I could see myself falling down another rabbit hole, so I'm kind of trying to guage here if I'm nuts.

I won't buy duplicates unless there is a value involved. Like I bought a test pressing of Black Road Bands EP for instance (may or may not be worth something later. Who knows).

What does your collection look like? Mine pales I'm sure to some but here it is. No fancy record player yet and I use a bluetooth speaker. hahahaha. Take that audiophiles!

This is my newest vinyls.

These are my previously collected or ones I received from relatives.

SHARE WITH ME! OH and I'm not sure if this belongs in music, but like, I think it does?

i've been listening to records since i was a kid in the late 70's/early 80's. there are a TON of records i used to own that i sold that bum me out (because i wish i still had them). i still have a few thousand.
i have a 70's Thorens turntable that i got about 20 years ago when prices were downright reasonable.
i don't really bother with streaming, so i never stopped buying records (i dislike referring to it as "vinyl". just a pet peeve of mine, because it's sort of a trendy buzzword these days), and cds (which i still think are great & you can get used ones SUPER cheap at the moment).

here's my stereo:

I started to collect records 7 or 8 years ago, now we’ve got I think roughly 150pcs (I say we because it’s a passion I share with my girlfriend).

I think we use to buy something like 10-15 records/year, we’ve slowed down right now because the weight on the shelf we use to store them is too much and our house is too small to move them somewhere else, so we have to wait until next year when we move in the new apartment to start again.

I used to look for originals, UK presses, colored things, special editions etc, but right now I got to the point where the only thing that matters to me is that it sounds good.
Most of my stuff is sludge/post-metal/prog/math related, some early post-punk/new wave, and a handful of jazz and funk classics, while my girlfriend is more into collectibles, and she’s a ‘70s rock & prog head so we have early editions of The Who, Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Camel, Gentle Giant etc.
I got to compare those editions with newer ones and honestly – if the repress is decent – the difference is really thin (besides the fact that some old records are not in MINT condition, so you hear some pops here and there).

My opinion is: if you’re looking for something old and the repress sounds right (you can check Discogs and easily find opinions on everything), just buy it, and with the same money you’ll grab three records instead of one.

Gonna snag a pic of our collection tonight if I remember.

:joy:

Ps. obviously this excludes the almost 100 LPS left of our last album laying in our rehearsal room

I've still got all my vinyl from my youth (and like @voerking I have a Thorens turntable (bought new for my 21st birthday 34 years ago)).

The only vinyl I've bought recently is the remastered 20th anniversary OK Computer - I listened to it and heard a whole lot of things I hadn't noticed before, but when I then listened to the original CD I realised that a lot of them were there too, I just hadn't listened with as much focus for a while ;)

Huh, I posted two hours ago but it never showed up. Weird.

Anyways, I currently have over 1100 vinyl LP's. And two turntable set ups throughout the house. It's a sickness.

I tend to just buy what I want to hear, or stuff you can't get on other formats. I have a couple of nice pieces and most of FUZZ's output* (the band w/ Ty Segall) but nothing really determines what I get except what I spot when I mosey into a record shop or something I'm really keen to get a physical copy of.

*i think all I'm missing is their version of 21st Century Schizoid Man on 7"

oh and the live one

My record collection is pretty big. A lot of rare Japanese punk and Anarcho. I have lots of that LA style "no-wave"/noise rock, noise core, crust/d-beat, and grind from 15 years ago when I was in a band. Ska, dub, old electronic records, and novelty records get spun a lot too.

I've got some stuff I can't show because they were supposed to be destroyed haha (like due to contract disputes between some people, I got them from a band member). Only reason I bring it up is that it is weird...the speed changes per song and side which makes it nearly impossible to play. The phantom limbs/fleshies split on 7" fluctuates on one song.

I don't really like color vinyl but it won't stop me if that's all I can find. They seem to wear faster.

My mom, dad, and Grandpa gave me all their vinyl. I've got some cool stuff and terrible stuff from them.

The wife has all the special Radiohead limited swag things. She doesn't listen to them though.

I've got a Ghoul bootleg coming (this ghoul, not the other ones). Recently got all the official Gauze album reissues too. That fourth album is awesome.

I've been slowly picking up south American music too. Especially Peruvian stuff.

Only requirement is that it's gotta be interesting. I like good cover art too.

My amp is an old Yamaha and the turntable is Technics sp-1600 my parents got when they got married in the 1970s. I think it might be on it's last leg. It get some good tape style warbles sometimes until I tap it. Two years ago I switched to a Shure cartridge and it's good enough for me. The original cartridge and needles are stupid expensive.

It's also fun to log them all in discogs. I'm so far behind though. I think i've logged 1/3 of my records and a few of my CDs and tapes. I just checked and it's at 197...so I must be in the 1000 range of stuff.

Kind of depressing. I shouldn't look.

I started buying records around 3 years ago. I now have around 150 of them. I usually try to not buy too much records but I'm constantly on youtube discovering new stuff so I always want to add some records to my collection...
I have a cheap basic Audio Technica turntable and some cheap Edifier speakers but it does the job for now.. I'm still in school so I can't really afford upgrading (with all the gear and records I buy... forget about it).

Ok dude ok, I abide.

It's not a huge collection, but these are my 12 and 10-inches. I have another single 7" shelf in the bedroom. Almost all of it catalogued on discogs, but haven't been there for a few years since I got scammed for some rare screamo (never got the records). Whatever, that's only happened to me once. Also around then shipping from the US went up a lot, so that slowed down my buying to a trickle. Plus more money spent on pedlul, you know how it goes.

Most of this shelf is '90s/'00s screamo, emo, hardcore and such. A sampling, the first record in each compartment, clockwise from bottom left: Adobe Homes - Piñata (9"!), Malady - S/T (repress), Dikembe - Broad Shoulders, Raein - Perpetuum, 1.6 Band - S/T, Kate Bush - The Whole Story. The bottom right ones are actually all my pop/hip-hop/electronic records. Although I like that equally as much as guitar music, I evidently don't buy it too often. Next to those are the 10-inches, there are a couple R&S releases in there but mostly emo again. I don't care about limited color pressings, but in the cases where I have been early I have picked up a few.

And of course, the stereo itself. Sony turntable was a freebie from a friend of my dad, works great except it's missing the lid, and it had to get a new pickup. Awesome Technics tape deck, cheap second-hand store find, and the Sansui amp I traded my parents for, against my newer Philips one. Speakers are the ones that came with that Philips console, mid-sized 3-way/8" ones (on stands). You can also see some of my tape coll. there, I have like 100.

Here's my stuff. Pretty much everything I've bought since I was kid (my wife says I hoard. I do.)

Turntable is a freebie I got from work. I don't have any rules about collecting...if there's stuff that's only on vinyl I'll usually buy that. Old prog rock, etc.

I really like the smell.

I started out buying vinyl in the 80ies, then changed to getting CD's for a few years in the 90ies, but came back to vinyl again and since then I'll try to get the wax version of an album, if possible. The sound of a needle dropping and the slight crackling before the music starts makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

I used to have different turntables (Lenco, Marantz) in different rooms for a while, but then sold them all to get a Linn. I'm still running the same good old loudspeakers I got in the 80ies, their sensitivity is good enough for the small tube amp, which is probably around 7W or so?

I buy records online, in local music stores, in almost every travel destination and quite often, I get records directly from the band at concerts.
