Some links:
I always wondered if the 200e freq shift ring mod was analog. Looks like digital carriers with analog signal: https://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewt ... 9582756379
Speaking of frequency shifting, Todd Barton is in the case: https://www.instagram.com/p/BqCiDemFSmX ... v3feepdpdd
And Chankgeez showed me this fancy guy:

And a sound sample: http://theshamblers.blogspot.com/2011/1 ... emolo.html (SoundCloud link near bottom)
Ring Mod shout-out featuring The Vermona, bitrman, mf-102: http://www.dubbhism.org/2010/02/ring-mo ... er-mf.html
More shootouts: http://ernstvanderloo.com/?p=24
And if that isn't enough, how about a spendy X Japan ring mod: https://reverb.com/item/11851554-free-t ... japan-rare I think it's for violin though.

(I've never found an x Japan song that I can pick out ring mod though...but I haven't listened to everything

I missed out on that one...
Still got my v1
Back to frequency shifting...
I think the dome filter is used when in inserting an external wave. The dome filter creates a phase shift/cancel of the external wave. The signal is balanced modded against the 0 degree external wave and then demodulated by the dome filter output to cancel either the phase of the lower or upper frequency shift. I think the Bode and Haible work on this idea.
If there is no external input, I don't think you need the dome filter...just a quadrature oscillator which is what I think the buchla 100 patch and 360 systems patches are based on. I think the buchla just uses an external phase shifter to create the quadrature oscillator...his ring mod design is a bit different and based on matched pairs or transistors (like the Carlin). The 360 20/20 looks like it used two mc1496 (may be wrong) to mod/demod.
It's all guessing at this point though.
If a digital digital oscillator with quadrature output and some ad633 or other modern chips are used, a compact design may be possible. The modern chips may be a needed to keep everything balanced for perfect cancellation....don't know their tolerances and how hard it would be to match or trim?

Re: Ring (and/or Balanced) Modulation for the masses
I think Hordjik has a frequency shifter too. Todd Barton has been messing around with it a lot. (There is a link to an Instagram post up there too). Could be some other 4u make but I think Barton said it was Horjik

Re: Ring (and/or Balanced) Modulation for the masses
Linear frequency shifting / single sideband modulation is awesome and quite easy to do digitally as you don't need to do all the component matching for the dome filter. Here's a bit of code that spinsemi offers for free that does the dome filtering and multiplication + summing/subtraction for isolating the sidebands. Just skimmed the last page so probably mentioned already, but IIRC the math is:
[Carrier (at 0 degree shift) * sinus modulator] + [Carrier (at 90 degree shift) * cosine modulator] = upper sideband
[Carrier (at 0 degree shift) * sinus modulator] - [Carrier (at 90 degree shift) * cosine modulator] = lower sideband
[Carrier (at 0 degree shift) * sinus modulator] + [Carrier (at 90 degree shift) * cosine modulator] = upper sideband
[Carrier (at 0 degree shift) * sinus modulator] - [Carrier (at 90 degree shift) * cosine modulator] = lower sideband

Re: Ring (and/or Balanced) Modulation for the masses
Yeah, digitally. Like ring modulation, it's easier.
I think some of this is just the exotic challenge of the analog realm. There ain't many analog frequency shifters. There are some digital ones out there though (koma, synthesis tech, Alexander, Sputnik, probably some in those eurorack multifx). Analog, just the buchla and analog systems currently in production...Sputnik never released their licenced version of the Haible (nor has synthcube who owns the production rights at the moment since his passing).
And Joel from Chase bliss read my off handed comment about what a chase bliss ring mod would be...and it would be a frequency shifter haha.
Just havin' fun and ramblin'. Ain't nothin' serious.
