SG headstock repair round 2 electric boogaloo

Postby WORMDIRT » Tue Apr 24, 2018 12:30 pm

So I bought an ebony SG with a broken headstock last year. I did a pretty damn good repair job on it (I think), built a jig, titebond, clamps, etc.
Last night it took a spill and cracked again in the same spot, not nearly as much, but it's definitely open and not going to hold tension very well.
Is it ok to just glue it again? I'm afraid of activating the old glue that's in there by putting new glue in there.
Where are the luthier fuzzers at?!

It’s worth a shot just gluing it again. Fresh Titebond won’t necessarily stick to cured Titebond, but if there’s some exposed wood, it might do the trick. On headstock cracks that have already been glued once, I usually add some dowels or splines to get a little more clean wood into the mix, but it’s overkill for some cracks.

Dude who plays guitar in my band has broken his sg at the headstock at least 5 times, usually from it falling while being leaned up against an amp. He's just glued it up with a pretty ghetto turnbuckle for tension (I think he used a shoe lace and a pencil) every time.

Doesn't have any problems with intonation, tuning, strength, etc.

Still haven't dived into this. I'm eventually going to just glue it again and go from there

Dude for real, glue it up. Also, your signature reminds me that upper decker blumpkins are boss mode.
