Howdy y'all.

So I got a soldering iron the other day and I was able to successfully swap out an old pickup in my strat. It was a lot of fun and has me itching to solder more shit and make some pedals.

So where do I start? Any kits I should look at, youtube videos, ect. School ya boi pls. :hobbes:

If I were to do it over again I'd drop like $100 on stuff from Tayda and get some solder off eBay (60/40 rosin core 0.8mm) and start building some basic 2 pot shit. PCB's are easy though I would suggest making stripboard stuff for easier projects.

You kind of have to jump in and get a shit ton of parts but the good news is they are all cheap. I have like 20 tackle boxes with roughly 1x1 inch slots, 4 for resistors 3 for caps. 1 for electro caps 2 for transistors, one for diodes, 1 for sockets, 2 for LEDs and bezels from 3mm to 10mm in about 8 colors each, 2 for switches and pots, a 3x2' toolbox full of jacks and rotary switches. A briefcase full of knobs, cardboard boxes full of enclosures from 1590B to J and G and DD etc.. ..

It's a consuming hobby, I love making stuff and then playing it. Some stuff works out great some stuff takes a while. I've never abandoned a project yet though. I would be happy to make you a beginning parts list and email it to you rather than try to type it up on my phone.

Here's a good guide for vero building: http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.mx/2012 ... guide.html
Some instructions on what components to get: http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.mx/p/components.html

Learn vero and perf board stuff and you won't really need kits.

Ghost makes quality mojo filled boards with great build docs.

Madbean also has great build docs.

Azx makes some nice boards that are not overly complicated http://maskaudioelectronics.bigcartel.com/

There are various other resources, just find out what you want to build and go from there.

Also get in touch with Dwarfcraft. They had a bunch of Devi kits a while back for pretty cheap. They might still have some hanging around.

+1 for madbean, also diystompboxes.

+1 bass fuzz is amazing first project.

Runoffgrove projects are great too.

Thanks for the answers dudes. I'm gonna buy a kit to start and look into getting parts just to make whatever. Gonna hit up dwarfcraft about those Devi kits too. I'll let you know how it goes.

Do a small BYOC kit and then give your hand at Vero layouts.

http://effectslayouts.blogspot.com/ is a great resource further down the line especially if your into etching.

take your time, watch a few videos how to solder. I got lucky with the first thing i ever built and then I fried the next four things.

I never got along with vero but, I definitely cant suggest for everyone to learn PCB design like i've done.

Thank you Drod!

Everyone asks the same question but no one reads the answers. I don't even waste my time spoon feeding people anymore. Look at my post count and guess how many times myself and others here have had to type pretty much the same answer to someone who doesn't even provide background information about your personal budget for time and money not to mention your logic as to why you would even want to do this in the first place and what you expect to get from it as far as experience, status, money, gear or pussy.

It’s pretty obvious that I’m building voltage-starved fuzz pedals to get pussy.

I didn’t think I needed to say it.

I would just add that you get some nice job lots on ebay sometimes.

About 7 years ago when I was just getting interested I spent 12 quid on some guy's kit and got an iron, a sucker, loads of caps, resistors etc. I'm still using some of it today.

I generally prefer to see what secondhand/old stock stuff I can get cheap and then what I can do with it rather than order components for a particular circuit, but I have been spending years doing this now so I have a lot - I'm not suggesting you start out this way. It gives me a kick to be soaking up some of the surplus and salvageable stuff out there and put it to some creative use. There's so much of it.

Also, learn how to be safe handling and using leaded solder.

This...seems aggressive.

Im just doing it cause I want to. Im a bored motherfucker who likes pedals and has nothing but time on their hands.

That good enough for you?

If you want to fuck around with different circuits I would recommend getting a breadboard setup with a box that has in and out jacks, power connection, and a switch. This was the first thing I made and had a blast building circuits and swapping components out to see how the sound was effected. Learned a lot this way and then could decide which ones I wanted to make into pedals. You may want to just build some pedals first, though, but definitely worth getting a breadboard down the road if you become addicted to DIY. If you have time on your hands you will likely get addicted as it's super great fun....

And if you could recommend me a breadboard like what you described that would be pimp.
