yeah, you have posted that Sonny Simmons before. Never get sick of listening to it though.

I did know Trane's buried at Pinelawn. Lots of cemeteries around there.

Chank, is there anything like Steve Lacy but...arranged for guitar/guitars? I really love those sparse phrasing and strange intervals.
I've been a huge Wes Montgomery fan since I was 13 (a guitar player I liked talked about 'Bump'in' in Guitar World  so I HAD to look it up), so I need to comb this thread for some jazz guitar. Also love Pat Metheny and Joe Pass but I think that's about how well versed I am on the subject

Ooh, that's a tough one.

I like on this track where Wes and James Clay (on flute) are playing together:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIP8z01gZLk

I generally don't love the guitar in Jazz as much as some other instruments. There's definitely some great guitar jazz in this thread though. I'll try to post some more guitar stuff.

There's some nice guitar & bass playing together here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZN44cdpsro8

Then there's stuff like this which isn't really what you're wanting:

I wonder if you would like some harmolodics (if you're not already into that) - - Ornette in the late 7Ts, James Blood Ulmer, Jamaladeen Tacuma, Ronald Shannon Jackson, etc.

(i sat next to Ja Tac on the Amtrak to NYC once; I was too starstruck)

It's not Lacy-esque truly, but it does feature guitars in snaking lines intertwined with other instruments....

Something like this might groove ya?

Ronald Shannon Jackson - - Barbeque Dog

Also, Lacy's in the orchestra on this one:

Gil Evans - - Joy Spring

but probs not exactly what yer searchin' for....

Also, also - - Lacy's on the Monk tribute this appears on (shout out Hal Willner)

Good call on the Harmolodics, Dandolin. That stuff may be too busy though. Sometimes it's difficult to pick out individual lines. (Love that Ronald Shannon Jackson stuff w/ Vernon Reid.)

There's this where they're sometimes playing together:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbZIiom9rDA

… and of course, Coltrane's Ascension which's rather dense. No guitars on either of those though. :idk:

Coleman's guitarist Bern Nix (some of which was posted earlier in the thread) is nice, but it's only a trio:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omejUep1oQ0

Then there's this, which isn't really jazz?:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8t7SIwXywoo

… and, shit, I don't think I'd heard that Bern had passed  :

Yeah, this year.  I missed Arthur Blythe's passing earlier this year--there's just too many of my icons leaving....

Good calls--Lacy was a master of sparsity/concision and not given to the prolix.

btw--went back through the thread and added artist names/titles to avoid future re-posts--too much great jazz rattling around with the cobwebs b/w my ears to be double posting....

Man, I picked up the Albert Ayler/Don Cherry "Vibrations" LP this past BF RSD and it reminds me why I love Albert so much. I also picked up Sonny Rollins on Impulse but what's slaying me, and Chankgeez will attest to this, I'm not normally in the "smooth jazz" category but the Wes Montgomery live is Paris LP on Resonance Records is just exquisite. I mean, just gorgeous sounding and performed. It's been a nice few days listening instead of just playing all the time.

Was wondering when you were gonna find this thread.

Good jazz is good jazz.

I was gonna recommend Albert Ayler as someone who kinda sounds like Steve Lacy (not really, but, for this comparison, yes). More his stuff with his brother, Donald, than with Cherry maybe. The Ayler brothers were a little more rustic together. It all has to do with the New Orleans/early jazz conception. (Still no guitar.)

There are some strings on this date though:

(Dandolin, you can re-post anything you want. I'll gladly listen to it again. )

Isn't it the other way around, that Lacy sort of tries to sound like Albert or at least channels him?
Don't get me wrong; I love Lacy too.
