This is a very impressive collection of Roto Toms. That's 21 Roto Toms in all. That is only $33.00 a Roto Tom.

nice that they give an explanation of what's been done to it. :whateva:

I emailed them and they said "It looks like the middle lets you switch in different diodes for clipping, and the other two knobs act as additional eq." They also added two pics:

Looks like the middle is a rotary with a few (4? 5?) different clipping options. Unsure about the other two. Maybe Mids and...?

Although it's been discussed more than once, I still don't fully understand what these things are in comparison to some of the other things out there that claim to be PLL's. There's clones that look the same, and then there are 3-knob versions like the Mantic Flex. So what's what?

A phase-locked loop (PLL) is a type of circuit, and not just a model name (which you likely know). So you can make a PLL-driven circuit that's not seeking to be a clone of the Schumann. Of course there are limitations on this method, so there will always be similarities amongst devices built around the PLL principle. The PLL system can be found in radio and TV broadcasting, which is a method that goes back quite a ways in the field of engineering. If you do a Web search on phase-lock-looping, you'll be able to read more about its history and applications.

Here's an excerpt from an interview with John Schumann. He didn't invent the PLL concept, but he was likely the first to put the concept into a stompbox.

What's a layman's definition of the Phase-Locked Loop function?

Something that takes a signal in, locks on to it, makes an identical signal, and as the signal changes, it detects the phase changes between the two and adjusts itself. It's how radio tuners work now, locking on to a station.

$396 for a Yamaha Revstar 502. Played one of these the other day and loved it.
