BTW, why the lack of cool grill cloth on mass production amps/cabs? The old Yamaha solid state amps had great grill cloths, not to mention Voxes but most companies are blah ...

Those grill cloths are actually my favorite. Reminds me of 60s modern art geometric carpet :)

Well, it's one of my amps, '68 Bassman, modded the normal channel to AA864 specs, bass channel is getting a hotrod after I'm done moving. Then I have A Gibson SG supreme also pictured, with Burstbuckers 1/3 in it, and then a Mesa Triple Rectifier under the rug!

Oh man that WEM grill cloth is slick... I'd actually really like to re-do mine on that VOX to something a little more loud, like this: https://i.ebayimg.com/thumbs/images/g/p ... s-l225.jpg

Why would you go from AB165 to AA864?

I didn't like the AB165 sound honestly, Plus I got the amp for $250 and it sat in my garage for 10 years. There's a bunch of crap in it that sucks tone (IMO) and it was pretty harsh. I know everyone likes the extra stage of gain, but I really wanted that classic glassy AA864 sound. Mind you I am exclusively a guitar player through this amp (currently, though I'd love a J-bass).

I also put in a variable Negative feedback loop by adding a 50K pot in series with that 820R that the AA864 uses. Its a popular mod and I really like it, when I turn up, you can roll the negative feedback out and it sounds pretty raw. It also just went in the death cap switch hole, so I didn't have to mutilate the old girl to get another knob.

The next step is adding the other half of the tube to the bass channel for a total of 4 gain stages! :joy: That way I'll have my "Blackface" tone on normal chan, and then 2 extra stages of gain on my bass channel.

I don't consider the silverface era Bassman amp to be highly collectable, but they certainly are going up in value like everything else. I keep all the original components and I don't drill holes in the original board etc. It's a sweet sounding amp, and my SG really sounds fat through it. It of course takes pedals like a boss as well.

^on that note though I feel like a lot of the oddball amps and guitars who's prices shot up in the early 2000s with the garage rock graze are starting to drop to more sane prices lately

Yeah, I'm definitely looking for a late 60's early 70's silverface Twin Reverb or Deluxe Reverb (I want both, I'll get whichever one comes along first, first :p ). Deluxe reverbs seem to be pretty crazy on price always.. Twin's are cheap because nobody wants 85 watts anymore.

Yeah it's funny how the big amps end up being the cheaper ones now. Also maybe try a musicman? I have an early HD130 210 combo (with the tube PI if it matters) that I LOVE and I've heard it described as a baby twin. You can get these around $400.

Tube PI always matters! Yeah I run a 12AT7 in my Bassman PI and it's really nice. Honestly I've been looking at the smaller Ampeg combos like the Gemini for pretty decent prices.
