About Macron : yeah, he's not as bad as fucking le pen (who doesn't even deserve an uppercase), and I voted for him yesterday because there's not much in the world that I hate more than fascists, but he's still dangerous. Guys like him want to run everything like a company and will destroy public services.
So yeah, we avoided the worst but it's still far from good. Not really worth celebrating.

I am conflicted.
Glad Le Pen can crawl away and die quietly.
Sad I can't clownon France out of loyalty to (and friendship with) Darcy and Osc... but they have successfully put a dent in the upwelling of scary nationalism across the world.
Spit some wine out a window for me while menacingly waving a baguette over your beret for me boys.

a) I apologise profusely that you have even heard of them. Seriously, I'm so sorry.popvulture wrote:There's a new Midnight Oil song there, somewhere.Iommic Pope wrote:Chankgeez wrote:Also, I heard Trump is hoping they're gonna rename Australia "The Don Under".

But also somewhat confused that you HAVE heard of them.
b) fun fact: Peter Garrett, Midnight Oil's lead singer, sold the fuck out on his eco-warrior roots and bad, dad dancing heritage to become a federal member of parliament for one of the two major parties (Labour, not even the Greens) during which period his crowning achievement was killing a bunch of untrained labourers to install installation in people's houses as part of some bizarre government initiative to save the environment/make jobs/rack up tax break cred.
c) Even this act did not piss people off as much as the fact that he RETURNED to making music recently.

Goroth shared the English version of this article, which I think is spot on about what is happening currently: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... varoufakis
I also think Osc is spot on. FWIW, Marcon is Hollande's political progeny. So it is really going to be economic rationalism "gays can marry stop saying we do not root for progress" business as usual. The dude's kind of a Trudeau if my understanding of Canadian politics is correct. Still, it's not exactly an answer to the growing concern over business as usual being a problem, like Varoufakis put so well in the article I linked.
Also, remember France is parliamentary and the legislative election will shape the next 5 years greatly, considering how close of a race it was for the 4 mains candidates in the first turn.
ALL HAIL THE BAGUETTES FOR FASCISM CONTAINED... FOR NOW...

Well, you guys had a similar situation to what we were in last November: a choice of the lesser of two evils.
Only you ended up with a slightly better outcome.

Ha! I think I'm just old enough to remember them—their success didn't last too long over here, but they had at least one huge hit when I was probably around 7 or 8. I always thought the dancing was hilarious.Iommic Pope wrote:a) I apologise profusely that you have even heard of them. Seriously, I'm so sorry.

That is crazy... I think for some reason, maybe due to my absorbing their image as an 8 year old, I always assumed he was hardcore about good politics. I remember seeing stuff about him in the news once or twice over the years, but it was mainly just saying that he'd become an elected official, nothing specific about his policy. Anyway, it's certainly ironic... and shitty.Iommic Pope wrote:b) fun fact: Peter Garrett, Midnight Oil's lead singer, sold the fuck out on his eco-warrior roots and bad, dad dancing heritage to become a federal member of parliament for one of the two major parties (Labour, not even the Greens) during which period his crowning achievement was killing a bunch of untrained labourers to install installation in people's houses as part of some bizarre government initiative to save the environment/make jobs/rack up tax break cred.
Back to topic, I'm sorry about the lesser of two evils pain, Frenchies, but yep... y'all did better than we did. I'm glad Trump doesn't have another arch-villain to invite to parties at his volcano-top golf club.

Re: Is there a Frexit in your future? Frenchies check in, pl
There is a good book from Portuguese writer José Saramago called Ensaio sobre a Lucidez (essay about lucidity?) that starts on the day of the national elections where a vast majority of the population had voted blank. Then ensues the struggles of the government trying to understand and undermine this non-movement that had no organization and no leader.
I wish and hope that we (the world) will do that at some point.
