Internet band/let's make some music bros

Post by Jwar »

So instead of constantly derailing sir Frenchies thread, I figured I'd make my own.

No one really in my area digs the same shit I do, so why not do an internet based band? Fuck it! I have an interface and DI, just need a recording program that's not shit. I do have Garage Band, but there are surely way better ones for the Mac right?

I'm down for singing or playing bass. I love doing both.

For singing. It doesn't matter much. I can do some growling, but I enjoy actual singing better. I love heavy stuff, but I also love weird stuff.

For playing bass, I prefer more droning or fast paced. I don't djent, but I do like heavy, smashing bass lines.

I'm also open to doing some covers.

I can list out bands that I'd be open to or we can just play around.

We can also alternate singing, bass, whatever. I can't drum or play guitar (LOL), so really all I can do is bass or sing.

Who's interested? Who's done this and knows the best way?

Bros! BROS!

May I have the option to creep around in the background and only submit material in the rare event that it's a decent fit? (ie: not be a primary instrumentalist). That said, I can make noise and fumble around on guitar. No vocals here, but I can program drum machines and generally nuke existing files.

Regarding execution, I'd say find an agreeable cloud platform that allows control over who has editing rights and then simply share .wav, .aiff, or other "universal" lossless formats. A click line & tuning reference at the leader of each file will make dropping them into whatever DAWs are at hand far simpler.

Maybe member sub-folders for stem mixes, etc. keeping the original takes intact.

Yes please do creep! LOL! It's be awesome to have drums or fumbling guitar! :)

What kind of platform would you recommend? I know Drod suggested something but when I looked into it, it seemed like it's not very up to date? Or maybe I'm dumb...

Also I need a good recording program that won't break the bank. I'm not opposed to pirate bay but I'm pretty ignorant in that respect as well.

I'll play. Might not contribute a ton, just want to be part of the group yo.

For a decent DAW go for Reaper. You download the full unlocked software on an unlimited evaluation basis and then can donate the $60 if you want. It is decently easy to use and there is lots of forum support it looks like.

While that is how you can use it, that is not the actual terms of the software. There's a 60 day trial and then you owe them $60 bucks after that. They just never enforce it. Think winzip's never ending trial. But yeah, try out reaper, it's great. Though you probably don't need to do too much beyond garageband if this is managed right.

I'm down to chip in to this as well I'm good with the tech stuff and audio side.

You'll need a interface, a DI (if you want it to sound like an amp or an amp with a DI), or you can go direct through the interface if you have a passive instrument because it won't clip as hard, a program to record and some headphones that are decent or monitors. I'd go with headphones if you can, it's cheaper.

I use Audacity or Ardour, as they both are natively bundled in the xubuntu studio install. (AKA open source and free though they accept donations).

Ubuntu is not without its "charm" mind you, though both programs purport to run on other platforms.

I'd love to be a part of this, if you'll have me.

I did something with a friend of mine a few years back and we just shared wav files (back when I was PC), and then just imported them into our DAWs. But we settled on reaper in the end. We used dropbox for sharing.

Didn't realize that. Guess I should buy it already.

Dropbox would be ideal for sharing.

All DAWs would be fine for usage so long as we settle on a file format (.wav seems best?).

I would be down for some guitar.

Into this idea.
I could offer up guitar, bass or, if I can work out a better recording setup, some rough drums.

Hey! Let's talk about serious thing. We're gonna talk about guitar, dude.

Very cool! So we got some good interest here! LOL!!

So we've got several guitar players, bass options, vocals and even drums, but if not maybe drum machine/beats made by a program.

I like dropbox but Drod said it shits up the files. LOL! Any other thoughts on that? It comes up first when I search for music file sharing.

Any site with good support would be awesome. I mean, obviously a file will degrade on some level, but there's got to be a good way to compress and share music with each other.

The other thing that sucks about Dropbox is it's only free to a point, which is annoying. Google Drive however is free no matter what, but I'm not sure you can use it that way?
