Marriage

I personally don't see the appeal, but I think it might be somewhat based on my geographical location. Marriage seemed to die out with my parents' generation. My friends who have been in long relationships and even have kids, they honestly don't think about marriage. My thesis is that it's based on religion, or rather non-religion, as our demographic consists of +70% non-believers. Marriage is traditionally thought of as a Christian value here, a pact with God. Something most people might shy away from. And I would definitely rather spend the money on pedals

We do have something similar to marriage here, but I don't know the word for it. It just gives you the economical privileges that come from a marriage, but it has nothing to do with the church. It's state business. Socialism, amirite?

But ultimately, it's each to their own. If you think it might end up being the best day of your life, you can't put a price tag on that!

Not just generational or loctation: i am glad for all the gays i know who want to get married and finally can, but the cynical anti-authoritarian in me just sees gay marriage as an other manifestation of gayness being recuperated into the fold of normative structures and dynamics yadda yadda yadda the state blah blah religion. Also i was sent to a one gender catholic school as a kid.
Would get married to prevent my estranged family from trying to get involved if i was dying.

Also love a good party sometimes, because i am a mediocre but very confident dancer. And actually the last wedding i went to was a great night, until my uncle got into two fist fights.

I tooootally get where you're coming from but I'm definitely in the "getting married because fuck you" crowd (if I end up in a marriage type relationship with a man..). The sadness of boring conservatives is too delicious a fruit.

I feel you. I have thought about it in the past, but almost entirely bc of legal benefits and the ability to throw a gaudy spectacle in my parents' faces. But in the end those didn't feel like good reasons to engage in a legal religious institution when I fundamentally disagree with both organized religions and laws.

Free grog, food and live music is enough reason for me to be ecstatic about anyone else's weddings without ever really feeling too keen on marriage myself.
My cousin just got engaged and we've been super close literally all my life, so that means engagement party, bucks and the wedding all happening in the next 12 motnhs or so. Keen.

I just found out that a friend of my wife is getting divorced. They have four kids and have been together I believe a decade. I would feel sad about it but apparently they both have been cheating on each other.

Moral of the story. If you can't be a one man/woman person, or have an open relationship (yea right like those work! hahahaha), then don't tie that knot. If you find out your spouse is cheating, kick their fucking ass to the curb. If it's something you can work past, which in cases it can be, then that's awesome. Most people can't though and are repeat cheaters.

I'm happily married though. My wife drives me insane sometimes and I want to kick her in the butt, but we get each other. She's my rock and I'm hers. If I didn't have any other friends in the world (and lately it's seeming that way), it wouldn't matter as long as I have her.

Now if I lose her ever, I don't know what I'd do. Thank God for my children. They make everything so much better.

Personally I would respect a cheater over an abuser 100% of the time. Both disgusting behaviors but one is definitely more serious and dangerous than the other.

Agree about moral of the story. Cept the infidelity thing. Once someone betrays that trust one cant unring that bell. And the assault/battery thing. Unless you meant kick their ass TO THE CURB. Then yes, hella.

OK so 2 of my cousins, brothers...no more than 4 years my junior...one stateside one overseas are going through messy divorce. Both have kids, all under 5.

Yes it is! I would never, ever do that. No way. I love my wife and I respect women. Now if I had a husband and he got mouthy...nah. I'm not a violent dude. I have an anger problem sometimes, but it more turns into a hissy fit. LOL. Just ask my wife. She'll tell you I'm the biggest softy around.



Marriage is great though. I think it's one of the single greatest things I did with my life. That and having children. Those little girls can put a smile on my face no matter how bad a day I'm having.

Married to my wife for 8 years now...I propose to her after 3 months of going out and got married the year later. Since then we've travelled a lot, lived on the otherside of the world for 6 years, had two kids and are both just past 40!

The wedding itself was awesome...not much of a ceremony...but a massive reception and after party for close friends...best party of my life!

Our youngest, 18months old, sleeps in our bedroom...so we have no sex...

But we still cuddle...
