There's more of a sense of family and community, and less of a sense of a herd of sheep, is what I meant. People are more diverse, in race, ideas, interests, and the culture is less money-hungry and power-hungry. Also, they are OK with doing things for the good of you and your fellow man, like, they actually care about the guy next to you more than the cash in his wallet... I can't wait to move back...

Togetherness and a sense of community is one thing but what western society has boiled down to is literally a bigass herd of sheep. I wonder if it's any better in Europe? It's a bit better in Canada than it is in the US, I know that.

All my social interaction with other humans was with professional musicians do to the "home schooling", [my parents ran a home recording studio] so I was warped in a totally different way  then the norm, nothing like spending all your time around those guys to make you cynical and apathetic towards the rest of the world :grumpy:

I think the idea that one must fit in is almost universal, it's that deep down tribal thang, some us has evolved passed it and some us us haven't.....who's to know though who is right?

YOU ARE SO LUCKY!

but yeah, humans have been together in groups for a million years, hell even Chimps have "families" of sorts... So I think the want of being surrounded by people like you is just a natural thing, but I feel like it's been taken to the extreme... leave it to modern society to pervert one of the oldest feelings we have

Being mulatto and going to shows was interesting. Especially when people would say they are "blacker" than me, since I didn't act "black" or listen to shitty rap. I really just let that pass seeing how a identity to most contemporary music can not be based upon color. If it's an old negro spiritual I'd understand. I'd pity the blacks who thought playing an instrument made me white and somehow thought themselves clever for calling me Jimi Hendrix or Lenny Kravitz.

It gets worse as you get older. Flamenco will never judge as it is a conglomerate of different cultures, inclusive rather than exclusive. shrug, seems everything is vs. and competing rathing than combining and defeating. :o

I mean....yeah I have been known to bump Thugs, Pac and Biggie on a regular basis and hit up the hood parties, but somehow that is in opposition to my use of proper grammar and love of a wall of noise and lots of "SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHSHSHSHSHHSHHBEEEEEELEEEEPBOOOPP BOOM BOOM BOOM SHHHSHSHSHSHSHSHSHSSHHSHHHHHHH" between songs
I was at a show the other day sharing drinks with some cool local rappers chattin it up about beats and rhymes but as soon as my buddy walked up, wearing tight jeans, an orange plastic belt, a band shirt, and woman's pea coat on his semi-fro-havin, unshaven, 5'6 self, they gave me weird looks and got weird with me. Not down for that.
It also doesn't help that a regular outfit for me is a pair of dress pants, nikes, artsy or jazz shirt and jacket
this seems to stand in opposition to both factions, who both take offense when I play classical guitar, jazz chords or flamenco rhythms
*sigh*
I guess I'm just mad and needing to rant somewhere, where better than ILF? --'
Where were you when you wrote this--FL or CA?

I disagree; I think things are improving, especially in the noise/diy scene, & being reinforced with music festivals including different types of bands/genres. But then I don't go to country gigs.

Yeah, people are people and often they like to just stick with the people they think are like them and dress like them, which is dumb.

Some of the best people I meet/enjoy are people who's tastes are varied and like different kinds of music and not feel they have to do/say/think like other people in their group or click - whether that be a ground based on race, music, both, etc.

It's good you like what you like and dress how you like and have friends that dress as they like. Seems like those local rappers aren't used to people outside their comfort zones of dress and expression.

It's stupid too of the music scene folks where everything is about the genre they like. Not everyone is like that, of course, but there are so many lemmings that just dress/act/play the part.
