Missed that you put the Janne Schaffer album on there! What a beast. Don't know much of his solo stuff but I am very well-versed in his collaborations with Electric Banana Band

Janne Schaffer is one of the best guitarists that I have heard. Two years ago I purchased his "Music Story" collection that contains twelve albums (almost impulse buying, because I only knew one single song of him before that date). Most of them are absolutely brilliant!

@voerking: some really cool Jazz albums in your list! :thumb:

wait compilations are allowed? I nominate pink floyd's "a collection of great dance songs" then.

And yeah I forgot kyuss but let's be honest the first qotsa album is close.

Of course compilations are allowed! The Bevis and Butthead Experience and Nativity in Black are two ALL time favorites of mine.

On my quest to become a better guitar player, I understand that other artists before and after you have huge impacts on how a person plays and what drives a person to get better. This whole exercise was to remind me of what inspired me to play and to pick up playing again at three intervals of my life right now.

Also this thread is great for my playlist on my phone :snax:

I was never so hot on the post s/t stuff, but that LP has stood the test of time for me (also a big fan of the tinfoil Travis Bean sounds employed throughout).

I was lucky enough to see them open for The Cardigans in Austin after "Lovefool" was a hit, wherein all the fratboys almost booed them off the stage

Still a great show, however.

I mostly listened to them live and not really much on record. :thumb:

If I had to pick a Boston rock album, it'd probably be this one (although from a slightly earlier period in Boston rock history):

Lots of great Boston bands across different eras though.

Unsurprisingly I have not heard a single one of these albums. Though I assume I've heard some tunes on them. I listened to the radio in the 80s so something from Huey Lewis and Simple Minds must have gotten into my brain.

I had to throw out so many other gems out of that list to cut it down to twenty!

@goroth: A few songs that got huge on the radio (or at least some radio play) from these albums are:

Foals "Olympic Airways" (Featured on the FIFA 09 soundtrack!)

Joe Jackson "Steppin' Out" (One of the songs on the radio that always made me wonder "who did that?" in my childhood. When I was 16 or 17 I heard it in the car again and my father told me he had at least one album of Joe Jackson. Instant love! JJ has a great piano style and he influenced me a lot!)

Kraftwerk "Die Roboter" ("The Robots")
Kraftwerk "Das Model" ("The Model")

Kraftwerk "Taschenrechner" ("Pocket Calculator")
Kraftwerk "Nummern" ("Numbers")

Huey Lewis And The News "The Heart Of Rock & Roll"
Huey Lewis And The News "I Want A New Drug" (No, this isn't a rip-off of the "Ghostbusters" theme! This was done before and it inspired Ray Parker Jr. who got sued by Huey Lewis afterwards.)
Huey Lewis And The News "If This Is It"

Huey Lewis And The News "Perfect World"

The Police "Spirits in the Material World"
The Police "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic"
The Police "Invisible Sun"
The Police "Demolition Man"

Simple Minds "Promised You a Miracle"
Simple Minds "Glittering Prize" (I love the album "New Gold Dream" for other songs, though. "Colours Fly And Catherine Wheel"! "New Gold Dream"! Herbie Hancock's synthesizer solo on "Hunter And The Hunted"! So much good stuff on it!)

Steve Winwood "While You See A Chance" (My all-time favourite song EVER is on that album as well: "Night Train"   )

Okay, I have to do it. Listen to those over seven minutes. I pressed my cassette player's rewind button so often in my childhood. I can still listen to it every day. All instruments played and recorded by Steve Winwood in 1980. It influenced me so much. Those guitar riffs! The synth sounds! The vocals that start at 2:14 min (!). Play it on my funeral, please!

I have never heard of these Bags (just the L.A. band, thanks to all those rhino DIY compilations, which are all pretty great), but maybe every scene had their own respective Bags back in the pre-internet days.

Also would've never experienced other scenes were it not for those comps, truly above and beyond for a kid to behold

And as far as comps go, I would have to choose the 4CD Nuggets reissue, which I have probably memorized backward at this point, but deserves to mentioned in the GOAT list for anyone that hasn't eggsperienced it (why wait?!?!)
