Germany-sell my brother on it? Or not. Whatever. LOL

Postby Jwar » Thu Jul 09, 2020 10:54 am

Well my brother wants to move and I'm trying to help him. My German forumites, what are the reasons you would do this versus not? He's super unhappy and hates life here, plus he's like me and needs a new start. I'm worried about him going obviously, but I'm also for him being happy. I'll miss him if he really goes. He wants to be in Europe somewhere with his wife and 2 kiddos. I get it. Now. What are your thoughts with almost zero information???

Pro's-

Healthcare (tax paid)
Traveling freely inside of the EU (without Passport)
College (tax paid or lower cost)
Good infrastructures (public roads, transport...etc)
Beautiful and full of culture
Apprenticeship programs to transition from college to work
Childcare partially covered (depending on where you're at)
The country in more homogenized (less political fighting)
Lower crime rate than USA
No Family (like the rest of those fuckers, not his wife and kids lol)
Different political system that he's not used
Octoberfest (hah for him it's fine, he's not an alcoholic yet)

Cons-

No family (other than immediate)
Selling most good in the house
More expensive cost of living
Employment needs (unsure of which route to take yet)
Import taxes (VAT)
Different political system that he's not used to
Costs of goods
Not sure about red right district...I mean, right? hah

https://www.germany-visa.org/immigratio ... n-germany/

In short: it really depends on what he can do: e.g. if he has experience in a field that is hiring & short-staffed (and he can speak German) he's got a decent shot at getting an employment visa.

If he wants to move tomorrow with his family not knowing German and not having a job lined up, it's gonna be pretty difficult.

D.o.S. beat me to it.

Other countries have much stricter immigration laws than the US. Best bet might be to find ex-pat communities in low cost of living areas and try to scrape out a living there. Unless he's a PhD or has some amazing, unique skill.

Some of your Cons don't apply in my opinion. For example the costs for food and your daily needs is a lot higher in other European countries (Scandinavia, France, UK, to name a few). Other goods are pretty much in the same price range I'm sure. The political system is a lot more diverse, but that has proven good for Germany most of the time (during the last 70 years).

I don't know how easy or difficult it will be to find a job here. :idk:

I think ILFers would fit in better in Antarctica.

Can I add another Pro? Germany has as amazingly good train network - fast trains that arrive on time and can take you all over Europe. Or at least it did the last time I was there about 15 years ago. Also everyone speaks English which is helpful if, like me, you don't speak German. And they seem to understand about not dropping litter everywhere. All minor points I suspect, so feel free to ignore them.
