Rocking Out and Time Management

Postby eyobeez » Thu Aug 30, 2018 3:18 pm

I'm a guitarist who loves to ROCKNROLL heading into the teaching profession. Monday was my first day of student teaching (after spending two years subbing and working at summer camps), and though I'm so excited to finally get into this vocation, I get scared sometimes about managing time to play my guitar. I don't want my precious chops to suffer  I'm about to be the busiest I have ever been in my life, and if my girlfriend and I end up getting married and having kids... well...

So, I ask you teachers: what is your experience with this? How have things changed for you? How did you embrace the change? We could apply this conundrum to any job, family life included, so I'm interested in hearing opinions from people who aren't teachers, too.

Thanks for reading,

E.

All my friends who teach have plenty of time for jamming and other stuff.
Just keep playing when you can! 15 minutes a day is a lot more than most people do. Its all about keeping the muscles fresh and fast and your callouses built up.
As your schedule becomes more routine, you'll discover reoccurring pockets of time to devote to actions of your choice.
Everyone's time is finite and its ultimately up to you to choose how you use that which is available to you.

Thanks for your reply, Muff_Diver. I think the big problem for me is that my schedule has changed so many times. Once I get into a rhythm, I bet I'll feel less neurotic. Thanks again!

Don't be afraid to keep the comments comin, people.

Some of the best solo jams I have had happened at like 6:15 am when I decided to rock the rig I has assembled the night before. Unconventional times for jamming really squeeze out the unique material from my experiences. Maybe just try and play whenever.. get up 10 mins earlier etc. :)

I stumbled into the real job and kids situation quite a few years ago and although I try to noodle around regularly at home it helped me a lot to establish a few fixed, non-negotiable holy hours a week, where I would get out of the house and into a soundproof jam room full of big amps and a lot of pedals.

I don't suppose your girlfriend is also a musician, is she? Most of the teachers I have known who played in active bands were either single or playing in the same band as their partner. Neither my wife nor I are teachers, but playing in a band together has certainly meant music time is always guilt-free for both of us. Having a kid, on the other hand, has complicated band life. You'll find time if you want to, though!

Not gonna lie about it--School of Rock was pretty influential in my decision to become a teacher when I was younger.

I love that idea.

Wife, baby, full time job + part time work, and I still find time for hobbies. No big deal.

man if you don't have kids you can do whatever the fuck you want. I have a 9-5 and still shreddin with 2 buggers. my partner hates my guts sometimes when I take on too many shows but hey for the riff you know.. my current dilemma is finishing my magnum opus before she goes to nursing school lol then shit's gonna get real -real-

..if you have a passion for it, you'll make it work. might have to sacrifice your league of legends time, but you will be still be able to shred
i'm glad i can call you a friend. even if i'll never see you again
