I've been playing a rogue in a 5E campaign for like a month and a half or so now, and it's been great. I definitely dig how streamlined 5e feels after mostly playing 3.5. Also planning a World of Darkness campaign with the same group based around nautical were-critters and shipwrecks.

Find a local group! A lot of tabletop gaming/comic shops have regular games on that are a good way to find people if you don't know anyone who would play with you

Here's the map I doodled up for our campaign. It's pretty big--probably over 2' long. All of the names of locations (with one exception--I was scrambling) come from ancient words for the kinds of settings/regions they describe. Dronningen is a reference to an ice queen, for example; Veste ('fast') is a region where time passes differently; Weolcan is a city built out of substantive clouds, &c.

I've been wanting to try DD for a while but the couple times I've reached out where i live...no luck.

I've never played before, but since losing touch w Magic I've been trying to hop into a social game that'll get me out of the house.

That map looks awesome! Love the concept of VESTE too!

Never actually played DnD, although my brother (after him playing it at a friends house once) and I created our own pen and paper-thing based on it when we where young. Played that for hours. Also, instead of getting into the pokémon games (we didn't have game boys) and trading cards when the hype started we just bought a poster of all the monsters and created our own "DnD-style" (again, him only having played it once, me never) game out of it.

Now highjacking thread to talk tabletop gaming in general..that's ok, right?

Aaaand AGAIN, not Dnd, but at least in that realm of gaming (I think), although sci-fi, I started playing this with my gf and two friends two weeks ago. Hopefully we'll finish up the first adventure this weekend.

I'm in! Here are some thoughts:

1) The new edition of 40K is awesome except for the terrain rules. I have mixed feelings about the notion of a "living edition" because it means figuring out the current, correct, up-to-date rules won't always be easy, but at least they're responding quickly to balance problems. Has anyone seen the new Imperial Guard codex yet? Did conscripts go up to 4 points each? Otherwise, I don't think the nerfs they spoiled go far enough.

2) The current Star Wars RPG is definitely my favourite RPG. I believe it's basically the same system as most Fantasy Flight RPGs (like the Warhammer ones), but I never tried those. They're doing a setting-neutral version of the system soon, called Genesys, which I'm eager to check out.

3) I hope Ixalan and the new rotation makes standard fun to play again, but I think it's probably going to take some time for people to trust Wizards again. I'm dying to play Magic in a more controlled environment again, but standard events have been so desolate the last few years.

4) I'm excited for the upcoming X-Wing releases, especially Guns For Hire. I always liked the starviper, but it just wasn't good enough.

5) Anyone picking up the new Legend of the Five Rings this week? There's been a lot of hype in my area, but I'm always reluctant to get involved in another card game, what with the size of my Magic collection.

6) If you haven't already, check out the new Lazer Ryderz board game. Two of my friends locally designed it, and it's awesome, plus it has amazing 80s VHS-style packaging.

7) I'm starting a new Numenera campaign next week, and I'm drawing a total blank on a character. Anyone got any fun builds they recommend? I like playing characters that combine magic and martial prowess (think jedi) when possible, but the magic is more important, so I'll probably fall back on some sort of nano.

That looks super fucking cool, but I'm largely unclear on what's supposed to eb going on. It tickles the part of me that fucking loved the old, real, Gamma World games... I wish there was just more detail on Kickstarter rather than "solves mysteries about the local town."

At least it'll give me osmething to research tonight when I'm falling down stupid.

Played out fourth session last week. Eivind the majordomo was indeed a giant dickbag to the adventurers. He chopped off one of their fingers, cast a spell one to reverse their highest and lowest ability scores, &c. He stole an important bit of gear and blasted them off a cliff into a pine of bones that reanimated itself into a skeleton army. Once they defeated the army by using their natural environment to their advantage, the army reassembled itself into a giant skeleton with a sword whose blade’s edge was made of teeth.

They narrowly escaped into a toxic river that will take them into the heart of the Grung/Froghemoth forest which is are wreaking havoc on the surrounding settlemt’s water supply.

Having trouble getting players to do cool shit, though. They seem pretty happy to take their chosen weapon and roll for hit, damage during encounters. Worried it’ll get monotonous.

^ What...none of them are rolling to make fuck on a skeleton monster? 1-6 for amount of inches deep ...

Yo, I'm gonna go find this skeleton's mom and give her the mess.

It’s all falling apart.

We added a fourth PC. His brother is a regular, and vouched for his gaming experience. Dude hasn’t even finished his character sheet after three sessions; knows nothing.

Scheduling with five people is not good. Looks like it might be over.

Noooo!

Our group might be over too because 2 of the players (including probably the most committed to getting sessions organised) are moving away.
