I used to just think i only interacted with the segment of the deaf community that happened to be assholes. When i was in 5th grade we had a teaching assistant that was a total fucking bitch. Shed always try to make you feel like shit about her being deaf. One day when i was sitting down with my lunch she pulled my fucking chair out from under me and laughed when i spilled shit allover myself then told the teacher it was a mistake. How the fuck can it be a mistake??? In college i dated a partially deaf girl that quickly became impatient, bitchy, childish, and posessive. I thought it was just her until we hung out with her deaf friends one night. Worst night of my fucking life man...they were total dicks to me right off the bat, had the worst table manners, were unspeakably rude to the serving staff (they kept shaking their empty glasses when they wanted refills) and talked through the entire movie. They were like fucking teenagers.

I thought all that was just those individuals until i read this article. What a crock of fucking shit. Seriously this guy basically says "deaf people are annoyed that those who can hear have manners".

that's what happens when you make a fuss about someone being all special and handicapped and shit...they expect you to cater to their every whim. just like affirmative action, which has created a generation of discontented hothouse flowers because the rest of the world isn't going to kiss your ass just because you're black and thus your employer does.

the comments are particularly choice, particularly when people expect normal people to learn ASL so they can communicate. what makes you so special that i should learn a complicated sign language just so i can talk to YOU?

Really? The first thing is literally being able to hear. Deaf people are annoyed that we can hear. Theyre annoyed that we dont tell them every single thing about ourselves as soon as we meet them. Theyre annoyed that we have manners. Theyre annoyed that we can make music. Theyre annoyed that we dont know every single thing about being fucking deaf. How didnt you get that from reading the article??? The whole thing reads like "Ten reasons why deaf people are prickish and inflexible"

"Discontented hothouse flowers" made me Well said.

And to piggyback on your last 2 sentences...the proactive, mature and responsible solution is learning to read lips, by the person who is hearing impaired.
It's reprehensibly selfish to lobby for some ASL mandate which punishes and puts the onus on the "hearing" silent majority ( )
