How many jaded, 'realistic' people do you know that inspire positive action in others? Aspirational thinking is rare, and can move mountains when coupled with intelligence and competence.

Totally agreed.
Its just a pity that the sociopaths who stab and manipulate their way into manegerial positions are threatened by idealistic and aspiring people more intelligent than them and seek to crush these before they can be weaponised against their own egos.
And yes, i do believe that the majority of people "trying to climb the food chain" are sociopaths because a)they believe its a real thing and b)they think thats how you do it.
A little bit of c)the stupid system rewards them for it, as well.

But thats not to say that there arent good people trying to do good things in those roles, as you mentioned.

Also, where do I get my Corporate Marxist Shadow Master Black Belt?
And also, fuck the proletariat for not burning down the system that binds them to the wheel, he says looking for hard spirits to drown the ghosts of his working day in.

Also Im gonna be a douchebag and say that while I consider myself quite jaded i have been told by others that I've been a good role model for them.
So, theres that.
Maybe its because i do my best to retain some lingering naivete about the good and potential for good in people that i get more and more jaded every time im let down.
Or maybe that just helps keep an even keel on my cynical boat to grumpy harbour.

I love how you made those thoughts complete, here let me try....cut throat tunnel vision towards a goal, off the pig, the more you let your guard down to hold out a hand the quicker they can pull you down..it's called the food chain and to care is to waste time but to act services the cycle of truth and what is true but the faith one holds in a cycle that one becomes fimiliar with.

Idealists get their ass smacked cuz they don't follow orders.

Yeah absolutely, lower brain fight or flight instincts govern most human behaviour, particularly those sorts of people.
I wonder though, if they dislike idealists because they don't understand that there's actually more to this being human thing than simply surviving and hoarding all the resources?
Idealists are actually quite capable at following orders, provided that the orders given match a suitable goal/outcome that they can get behind.
The second they find out that's not the case though, the wheels fall off.

Haha!
I've got itchy feet after staying in my last job too long.
Its like getting out of a long bad marriage and thinking "playing the field" is appropriate.

iPope: you can only get the Black Belts from yourself. But I'll give you one for the price of a college education. Judging from my CDL (current debt level), I'd go with the first option.

Idealists are bad soldiers, for sure.

I recently told my boss that his behavior showed signs of sociopathy. He laughed. Insert Patrick Bateman gif here.

(Holy shit Batemen/BATMAN).

Sort of related: I've posted that David Graeber 'Bullshit jobs' article before, but it bears repeating that I spent the first seven years of my career in my field making around $15k/annum for full-time work that required a grad degree...the work was awesome and (I think) directly helped people; I had no boss to answer to, &c.

I thought I had a great idea to tie my skaz together with this other direction I was going to take it, but now I appear to have gone way too far into the new idea and its looking more like a distopian sci fi.
I think I can still make it work.
Why do I want to achieve things with my life again?
Oh yeah, the crushing emptiness of nonexistence.

I really feel for everyone in BC right now. The smoke is all over Washington right now, we are covered in a haze and you can smell the smoke.

I was gonna have a nice bagel this morning after waking up, but no. Instead my hands decided to just shut down and ended up throwing my last bagel into the bowl filled with soapy water that's in my sink.
