Cartridge Pedal

Cartridge Pedal

Postby Teej212 » Mon May 01, 2017 10:00 am

I guess the cat is out of the bag. I was trying to keep this one to myself but I couldnt hold it in. Shooting for a release date of July. Any comments, questions, suggestions, etc welcome.

This has been a project I have had kicking around in my head since I released the AARP, maybe even before, so I'm happy its finally happening!

Controls are:

Three FV-1 Pot controls, assigned to whatever the effect is
Tone
Mix
Feedback
Clock Speed - changes the clock rate of the fv-1

Also, there is a momentary footswitch that can be assigned to things like tap tempo, freeze, hold, etc

I like. Will you be releasing any chips with algos with this? If so, want spill the beans on what they are? Will there be a 8-way rotary switch to toggle through the different algos on chips with more than one algo?

I'm not an expression pedal guy but yeah I suppose thats possible.

I've got some other pedal guys who are interested in contributing effects to the project, and I too will be making plenty of options. I guess this would be a good place to hear what effects people would want? I'm working on a shimmer (I know...but I think the one I'm working on sounds pretty different) and have a bunch of ideas that should be pretty easy to implement. Its gonna be a 1 effect per card type deal but i think the price of the cards will be cheap enough to make that justifiable. Therefore no program selector. P.S. - programs, not algorithms ;)

Hmmmm, seems like a wasted opportunity to not have a way of having more programs available. It's much easier to simply turn a knob than to eject and inject cartridges in between songs, don't you agree? You'd have to take the cartridge out of your pocket/altoid tin/whatever, pull out the cartridge from the pedal, put that somewhere safe and THEN inject the new cartridge. It becomes more novelty than practical the way you have planned it. At least having the rotary switch there would give people and builders alike the choice of putting more programs into each cartridge. For all "one program" cartridges, you could just have the knob set to Prog0 anyways. :idk:

This is, of course, speaking from someone who plays live every now and then and have a buttload of gear on stage. If I'm just sitting at home noodlin' away, I'm sure I'd find the whole swapping ordeal to be kind of fun, but when it comes down to making the pedal versatile and practical, I think you might end up missing the mark with having "one program"-only cartridges.

Alternatively, external cart switcher device? What format are the carts?

And midi integrated FV-1 stuff would be magic! Not sure if you know anything about that stuff, but just tossing the idea out there.

This sounds rad, hope this goes well for you.

Is this going to use an LED screen?

Trying to think of this correctly, so this is a multi-fx device using a bunch of effects loaded on the spin chip? I don't know if you've ever heard of the DSP Dervish Eurorack module, but I think he uses the Atmel not only to drive the screen but as a memory storage for banks of effects. https://www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewt ... p?t=160436 I have a PCB for this but haven't gotten around to building it yet, but I imagine this will definitely expand the possibilities of your pedal (actually sounds like you want to make something like this in pedal form).

I've got my mind pretty set on no program selector for a few reasons. The point of the whole thing is to switch programs via card, not switch. Also I dont want to have the expectation that people contributing cards to this project are required to fill the 8 slots. There are a few other reasons but I wont go into them here.

Its not going to have a screen, that is going to over complicate things for me and will makes the box too expensive. MIDI could be somewhere down the road, I dont have the knowhow for that yet!
