Next Project: Triton Delay

Postby culturejam » Fri Jun 20, 2014 11:11 pm

Been sitting on this one for a while now, but I think it's time to release the hounds. :thumb:

The Triton Delay is PT2399-based, on the darker/murkier side tonally, and has about 900ms of delay time. The standout feature, however, is the dual delay time controls and the way they interact. There is a footswitch to toggle between the delay time controls, and when switching from one delay setting to the other, the transition is gradual rather than instantaneous. This means that there is a slow glissando-like pitch bend. It sort of sounds like doing a slow lean on a a vibrato bar on your guitar.

But, a video demo explains it better than words. I did a moderately adequate video with my iphone on a tripod. The volume is a little low, but I feel it fairly represents the overall sound of the pedal. I will be doing a better audio demo in the near future.

Here's the demo:

And here are some pics of my prototype:

So yeah, this thing definitely works and is ready to be ramped up into production. Just need to design the enclosure artwork, get some boards ordered, etc.

Yes. There is a pot that controls the "transition time".

And to embed, just use the YouTube tags around your link, and edit out the default "s" in https to make it http.

Not on this version, but it would be pretty easy to add. But then I'd have to go sideways with the enclosure to make room for a third footswitch. Som'bitch'll get big in a hurry.

Just had an idea: what about replacing the "time switch / transition / glide" footswitch with a momentary switch? I could see really using that feature as a repeated spot effect (like, every measure or so), so a soft-click might be nice from a UX point of view...

That's pretty much what an older design of mine is (the Neptune Delay). It didn't have have two time pots, but pressing the momentary made the delay time go from wherever the Time pot was set to very short, and then slowly morphed back to the longer time.

I could probably adapt the Triton so that instead of switching and sticking, it could toggle only while the switch is held down. So instead of Time 1 and Time 2 (as on the Triton), it would be Time_Primary and Time_Momentary.

Here is my shitty demo of the Neptune (and there are others on YouTube):

Reading your description had me thinking "that sounds similar to the Neptune Delay (which I have a build of) but cooler". It was already a cool idea and this really seems to make it even more usable.

Thanks, Bucky. It's kind of a personal choice as to which any give person would find more useful, but I definitely find the latching switch version with two Time pots to be more useful.
