Amplifier Line Out (how to use it to record with a computer)

Postby sylnau » Tue Feb 05, 2019 11:33 am

If I want to use the line out of my amp to record with a computer, what do I need?

I already have a Steinberg USB external soundcard. Do I need a speaker emulator pedal? What else?

I cannot mike my amp at home (this would be too loud).

It sounds to me as if you already have everything you need, your line out should provide a level safe for your computer sound card.

I'd just try it direct and then address sonic complaints once they've been identified. Working inside the box is not my familiarity realm, but I understand there is speaker emulation available in software form as well.
I've got to get off my ass and bring to reality that what has been quoted through existence.

You don't need a speaker cab sim pedal. It's much easier and more flexible to do this in your DAW (unless you get one of the really fancy cab sim pedals that are probably overkill for anyone not using it live). That's IMO anyway, as someone who records almost entirely straight into the box these days.

You should be set by just running the line out from the amp. You may need a DI or something to pad the signal cause some amp line-outs are nasty. You may be fine with just a padded cable

Don't bother with a physical cab sim, no matter what DAW you use there are amp/cab sim plugins, some decent ones even for free. I was an amp -> mic purist until last week when I decided to try the Eleven plugin in ProTools... ended up using it to record our EP for both guitarists.
