Plug a mic through a versatile distortion pedal. Remove bass frequencies in post if needed. Thats what I would do, and have done.

Low cut filter, crank pre gain, EQ and compress to taste. You can do it hardware or software, software is good for trying different things quickly, easily, and non-destructively. A tube preamp(or emulation) would be a good start. And maybe a tape emulation. Something that makes it sound like it was recorded onto tape so it will decrease the dynamic range and add noise in a natural sounding way. It's one of those things that you don't notice until it's not there.
