My last few quick recordings for reference and/or amusement were made with one of these

tidied up in Audacity on an old Compac PC running Vista ;)

I do have a paid for copy of Reaper and some drum software but I rarely use any of it.

No it is not in my home. ;)
It is in a huge industrial building.
We're 2 bands/gangs who're doing it together. So it will be both rehearsal/hang out space and studio.
We have been using another room(but not very nice, just an old industrial storage room) in the same building as studio/rehearsal space since last year, but some firm is going to rent the whole floor we're in now.
So the peeps who own the building built a new room(s) for us, and we had them put in a window between the two rooms. :!!!:
So now we will probably spend every evening there for the next weeks to get it we want to. And then moving all our gear.
Can't say I look forward to move the Soundcraft Series 2400 console.

Recording my friend's band, first time actually recording a band that is not my bands practice. For sure learned a lot for the next time I record.

i didn't want to start a new thread for such a basic question, so sorry if i derail at all, but here's the tldr version of my question:

i just ordered matched condenser mics, a dual tube pre-amp, and a dual channel compressor to run into a tascam 414. two questions: am i correct in going mics > pre-amp > compressor -> tascam?

2nd question: i go xlr from mics to pre-amp, but after that, can i go trs? or should i stay xlr? the gear i ordered can support either but i don't know if there is any benefit.

thanks.

That would be the most conventionally useful signal path, yes. Don't hem yourself in too much by trying to maintain a "correct" mindset though. This is where patchbays come in handy, you can normal them to support the optimal path without external patching, but it'll give you the ability to break things out of the chain or rearrange them without reaching around the back.

TRS and XLR both carry balanced signal, so on that front they are completely interchangeable. The wild card (to me) is the Tascam, but only because I'm not familiar with this specific model.

With the signal chain you describe, you're going to have a healthy signal by the time it reaches the tape machine. Those 4 tracks were designed with the bedroom recordist in mind, so if the Tascam has XLR input, you're going to want to confirm you can pad those channels, otherwise it can dump on another serving of microphone preamplifier and double as a fuzz pedal.

I've not had too bad a time dumbing channels down to unbalanced once the levels are healthy enough to make floor noise a non-issue. The only rules that are really important is making sure your inputs are fed from an output, beyond that most rules are pretty soft-serve.
I've got to get off my ass and bring to reality that what has been quoted through existence.

Exactly as crochambeau said. The 414 should be able to handle line, but line level is defined very loosely. There's consumer and professional line levels, both labeled the same that are wildly different.

So you should be fine, but if it gets too crunchy you may have to buy a pad to go after each compressor, just a passive volume drop.
