GarageBand is the obvious starting point, there's really no reason why ANYONE with 5 dollars, an iPad, and a love of music shouldn't love that. It can be a bit intimidating to try and record and arrange with it, but it's fun just to mess around, and the possibilities are endless.

For other guitar playing, Amplitube sounds nice, but my interface is PositiveGrid's JamUp device and app.

I'm sure these aren't the best options by any means, but you get enough free stuff to make it fun enough to check out (and maybe do some limited recording).

I had high hopes for my iPad as a guitar playing device, but I haven't done much recording yet, and my discovery of the Vox amPlug just made it that much easier to practice that way, as opposed to setting everything up on the iPad.

I bought a ipad camera connector kit. Gonna use my Maudio fast track to record some ideas in garage band. Think this shoulda be enough for the time being. I'll post back how it works after I try it all out

^ did it work?
also I have an iphone coming in and I have been thinking about getting an ipad instead of a synth. are the synth apps powerful enough to justify buying an ipad over a stand alone synth?

forgot to pst back in here. i got the connector last week and tried it with my maudio fast track. only tried it through the garage band app quickly. it was very very noisy, and sounded like the signal was drenched in reverb to the point it didnt sound good, too quiet. tried to go through the ampkit app too but couldnt.
guess the cheap chinese connector was the problem for the noise and everything, buying the acutally apple one for $30 instead of $15 maybe would have worked better :idk: might just spend the money and get something that will actually produce a decent recording. the new alesis i/o mix looks good. not shipping till january though.

pretty much impossible. You can set the phone and the ipad to update/sync wirelessly, but you have to have a "home base" type computer for your devices, I think.

Still haven't gotten an iPad, but it caught my eye that Korg apps are 1/2 price through 12/31.

Alesis iO Mix for an interface looks pretty sweet. Might be overkill for most people though and it's pricey ($299). Interfaces like this bother me because you know in a year or two it's going to be obsolete gathering dust and delegated to an expensive paper weight! If/when I get an iPad think I'll go for a more bare bones interface. Maybe something like the Radial Pro AV2 ($169) or the Focusrite iTrack Solo ($159).

For some cool music apps check out: http://www.ipadmusicapps.ca (mostly about apps)

For making music on an iPad (covers apps, hardware interfaces): http://www.ipadmusic.com

Oh, Impaktor looks like a really cool app ($5). Turn any surface into a playable surface. No more tapping on the screen!

My apologies if any of the above has been mentioned recently. I didn't read through the whole thread.

I like the DM-1 drum app for it's simplicity.
http://www.fingerlab.net/website/Fingerlab/DM1.html
I record a drumtrack and paste it in Garageband.

Then run guitars through a Apogee Jam, which is less than a hundred bucks.

Works great for doing quick demos at home.
