I am just getting back into guitar after a long break. I've always wanted to try P90s out. I'm considering a LP but I'm a bit nervous that as my only guitar, maybe humbuckers are a better choice. I've noticed sometimes P90s seem to get muddy with too much distortion. Thoughts? And yes I realize Iommi and Anderson have used P90s for doing sounds but I want more opinions.

The guitarist in this noisy punk thing I used to be in had p90s in his Eastwood Mosrite knockoff. Had a pretty sizeable board but his sound never seemed to get too muddy with them. Also for what it's worth Steve Von Till from Neurosis is a huge fan of p90s and I wouldn't characterize his sound as muddy at all.

p90s aren't so much muddy played with downtuned strings and lots of distortion as they are mid-rangy i've noticed. which is perfect for cutting through the mix if you don't mind a somewhat "dry" tone i guess to say for lack of a better word. it's not a nasally mid range but a growling one.

I've used P90s for doom/sludge, a crossover thrash type band, punk and surf rock. If they're decent quality pickups on a good guitar, you can dial in pretty much everything else to work, I think. I think it's worth having one single coil and one humbucker guitar though, in general. It covers enough ground tonally. You can also get humbucker sized P90s, so you could always buy a humbucker guitar, try P90s out and swap back if you don't like it.

P90s are great you just might have to use different settings on your amp or pedals than you might with a humbucker guitar.

P90s seem a little stubby for doom. You should go with something more heavy like a SCAR
