i've actually never tried the 12at7 in my amp. i just have no interest in backing the gain off at all. i like my cleans a little hairy as is. i can't imagine it'd work for me, but i guess it's dumb to not at least give it a whirl.

I don't really like a ton of gain from the amp.

Those EHX are pretty rad too, though.

I agree. I have a set of Tungsol 12ax7's I got as backups. I tried them out in my KMD which is tubed with RCA Greyplates, and the Tungsols were impressive. More attack and snarl. They sound big/open, & don't compress too fast.

The Greys were warmer, smoother, airier. The Tungsols seemed more aggressive and had more grind and punch. Lows are solid and punchy, mids snarl some, and the highs cut without getting too harsh.

I've got a 2 each of Mullard ECC83's, RFT ECC83's, and GE 5751's loaded in my Tremoverb.

I like clean cleans too, I just don't like the volume loss that comes with it.

I like raytheon windmill getters and telefunkens. Or Mullards too for some added midrange presence. I roll tubes all the time depending on the amp and desired results. Audiotubes.com is a great resource for nos tubes and subjective information on how the various brands sound.

That makes sense. I don't use much amp gain, but there's a little. It gets a little gritty when I dig in. Just a little hair on the cleans. I run into the low input of a 2203 with the preamp dimed, so it's almost clean, but not quite. I wouldn't gain anything (no pun intended) with lower gain tubes.

Just swapped the JJs in my Matamp with Tung Sols. HOLY FUCK!!! Made a huge difference. The highs are clearer but not as harsh and the mids and lows are more rounded. Same tone as the JJs but more pleasing to my ears.

One thing I noticed though was that the tube in V1 had different markings on it as well. One the other side of the JJ logo it has a CED (where the C wraps around the bottom of the E to connect with the bottom of the D... sorry no pics) and N5LN5 underneath that. Is this some different branding or something? I googled it but couldn't find anything on it. They're all short plates, not like the JJs in my Soldano, they're long plates.
