sick practice amps?

sick practice amps?

Postby John Matrix » Thu Dec 12, 2013 8:24 pm

I'm getting tired of lugging my full rig to place where my band practices, and leaving it there all the time is not an option. Any tips on a cheap, lightweight combo that is loud enough to be heard over a drummer? Doesn't need to be anything new, I'm fine scouring craigslist. Doesn't need to have good distortion either, I am fine just using pedals. I don't want it to sound like total ass, something with some bass to it would be nice.

depends on how loud your drummer plays. probably too loud. might get by with a silverface fender champ. they are pretty darn loud for 5 watts. or the marshall class 5 is even louder for 5 watts. tube watts that is.

For doomage, I've heard the Terror series keeps up. Drummer I was jamming with last year said the band he was in prior had used a dark terror, and it kept up at rehearsal.
You could probably get away with a 2x12. I was using My Orange 212 with the Sovtek last year and it was great for rehearsal. Kept up with a Dual Rec half stack no sweat (sounded better, too). And that drummer hit fucking hard.
Also, that shit fits in your car no probs.

Edit: Sorry, just read the "cheap". I think the little ampeg heads and hiwatts are going cheap at the moment? Google may make a dick of me on that.

I use a Beta Lead 212 combo. I got sick of carrying it around so I pulled the "head" out of it and use some Peavy cab at the practice space. I had a lot of expenses come up (including repairing the beta) so I put off the practice amp purchase for now. I just have to run that amp on "1" to not drown out the other doods.
