those classic SVT heads are kinda meh for the money imo

If you wait, you could probably get a 70's SVT for that price, and an 810 for $300.

the CL is fairly meh because unlike it's predecessors the midrange isn't tube driven. so it just doesn't quite capture the raunchy tone the of the V-4 or vintage SVT that is synonymous with Ampeg.

Wasn't Sonny selling a blueline SVT for about that in BST?

at that price, i'd swoop it even in that condition if i didn't already have a Mother.

I'm pushing 300-odd watts of stupid already and thought about it (when, really, I need to be going the other way with mah amps)...

something about Sparta, i dunno.
i feel that. i run 200 watts clean and upwards of 300 watts when overdriving the Mother.i just don't *need* two amps but i still use my V-4 with it.

What about the SVT-VR? Worth checking out?

the VR does have the tube driven mid range, i had an early USA VR and it sounded great, however they're not built any better than the CL is. in other words, a lot of money for circuit boards, with board mounted tube sockets all connected by ribbon cables. and they're typically a rats nest inside if they're older USA VRs because they were being built by disgruntled employees of SLM after the LOUD buyout who knew they were going to be laid off. then there's the Vietnamese era of VRs to avoid. and even with the newest ones you still have to mod the AC relay so the amp wont lock into standby mode if it sees less than 112VAC off the wall or some shit. oh shit, wait, don't even fuck with a new Ampeg SVT at all actually. they no longer use the same transformers they used to. the ONLY supplier didn't wanna make them anymore, upped the price, LOUD balked and went for a cheaper replacement so the Ampeg sound is a little different than it used to be. like the MTI era.

Older SVTs are where it's at, 12dw7 or death.
