Custom 4-12 advice

Custom 4-12 advice

Postby radish » Fri Apr 26, 2013 2:08 am

I am shopping around for a 4x12 cab or maybe two. So far I have contacted Emperor, Mammoth, Hex and Atlas. Still waiting to hear back from Hex. So far Atlas seems to have the cheapest pricing. So I am seriously considering them.

They are completely custom and I am now realizing I know next to nothing about cabs. My only experience has been a beat to shit Marshall 1960A from the 80s that I have owned for 10+ years. Obviously the dimensions should have an effect on the tone of the cab. I was originally thinking the standard Orange size of 29"x31"x15". What about a oversized cab? How would that effect tone?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I would most likely be loading it with the Warehouse g12-65 clones or Celestion Hot 100s if that makes a difference.

Can't really go wrong with any of those brands IMO, all though Emperor has a tarnished reputation depending on who you ask. Oversized will yield more bass response, but also a more directional cab. I only have experience with Emperor's as far as cabs (I have a mammoth headshell that is far superior in build quality but no cabs) which aren't as tall as you would think but are deeper then most traditional cabs. Both of my 12" guitar cabs have celestion g12-65 clones, my 4x12 has the Warehouse ones your asking about and I love them. Very wooly, great mid range and sweet highs. It's hard to make them sound harsh. As far as the 65's or the hot 100's it depends on if you want a more modern tone (KWC, Young Widows, OMG) go for the 65's for a more classic doom tone (Sleep, Sabbath, Etc.) go with the hot 100's.

If Emperor will build your shit right you can't go wrong with them. I have two and the cabs themselves are built really well. Never played through any of the others but I really wanna get a cab built from Mammoth one day. I also have the 65 watt clones like Skip, cept mine are Webers. I think it is my favorite speaker out of all of the ones I have tried. Haven't tried the hot 100s though.

I can add that Gentry (Hex Cabs) is super awesome to deal with. I bought a giant killer off of him and he was super helpful. Very reasonable prices too.
