Should it stay or should it go?

Postby sergiomunoz74 » Sat Dec 14, 2019 2:28 am

Hey guys, I'm seeking out some help with a dilemma. A while back I had a guitar custom made for me, and paid a pretty penny for, but honestly when I got it, it's was pretty poorly set up and the bridge was off so string spacing was off (no space for treble e, a lot of space for bass e near start of the fretboard). Not to mention fret edges were pointy, and it needed a fret level. Plus the finish was way shittier than the pictures made it seem.

Oh and one of the humbuckers didn't work properly and needs to be rewound.

Basically got dismissed by the luthier regarding the problems even though I was being nice about it. Contacted the person who made the humbucker with no response.

So it's been sitting around for a while, it's a cool shape, fanned frets with great profile. Do you guys think I should just get rid of it and sell it to a willing DIYer for a huge loss or try and take up the challenge/money to fix all these problems? Pictures up shortly just to get an idea

Oof that’s tough.

Is the guitar so unique that it fits perfectly with what your musical aspirations are?

If you fix the issues will you always have a bad taste in your mouth?

The question that has a “yes” answer is your answer.

^that is the answer.

The issues are all fixable but not necessarily cheap/quick so I can see the appeal of not bothering. :idk:

Who are these custom builders that do such awful work? (Not an attempt to get you to spill the beans on this one, just a rhetorical question in aimed more generally)

Honestly those questions truly stumped me, is it unique? Yes, but does it fit with my musical aspirations? Not anymore, if I fix it will it still leave a bad taste in my mouth? Probably actually. Considering my other guitar is a millimetric which I adore, and even though it was only marginally more expensive, had 100% more polish and playability. I think, I will sit on it, but it might just go into the bst.

I want to spill the beans but honestly the builder is small enough that it prolly makes no difference so I will just keep it to myself, but if ya wanna know, pm me. Honestly, it's my fault for jumping into a build, mostly because I liked the looks, and was bored waiting for my millimetric guitar.

Do tell. When people get a pass for shitty work, shitty work gains traction and the whole world fills up with shit and gets shittier by the minute.

Shame them. On every guitar forum you can find. And, if you’re committed do dropping this anchor, in a “make-me-an-offer” sales listing through whatever sales portal(s) they try to generate business. Either the builder starts caring or they get dragged, deservedly.

Set fire to the guitar to set your burdens free.

Or sell it and tell your tale of buyer beware.

Actually, these two ideas are not mutually exclusive.

Sorry for the late reply, I actually decided to take it apart but after taking it apart. I had the epiphany that it's 100 percent not even worth my time, when I have a guitar I actually like. I will post pictures tomorrow after work. It's in pieces now but I will go ahead and say the brand because fuck it whatever. It's Jillard guitars, and I could post one of his nice pictures from insta, but frankly it would be more telling if I take pictures that show how there is just so much unfinished for a guitar that cost me 1500 USD. I'm going to post it for a offer tomorrow too.

This is going to finally free my mind, as I've definitely resented the guitar since I got it, and especially after I got the millimetric build back, I've found myself resenting it even further.

Sounds like the right decision :thumb:
