Building a Warmoth tele bass

Tue Nov 14, 2017 12:05 am

Starting a thread because I ordered the body. This will be updated with pictures soon. I did a Custom T in roasted swamp ash, and a roasted maple neck; stainless frets, black dots, single P bass pickup which will probably be a Lace Riffblaster or Man O' War. I went with a Gotoh 201 bridge and a tele style side jack.

All of that said, I haven't decided on finish yet. The neck is going unfinished because unfinished roasted maple Music Mans are the best necks I've ever played. I'm deciding between a green stain with satin nitro over it to match my Tele VI, an oil finish and leaving it natural, or going unfinished with the body and seeing how it wears over time.

I didn't finish my Warmoth P, and it's been cool to watch how it changes over time. The wood continues to get darker and darker, and it's picked up the usual wear patterns on the contours, etc. Can't wait to see pics of yours. Love a Tele P.

That sounds killer. I like transparent green on swamp ash, personally. Are you going to do a pickguard? I'd love to have a P bass with a satin transparent green finish, one ply black guard and black hardware on it.

Those Lace Riffblaster pickups sounds great to me. They sounds similar to how the pickups on my Carvin P4 sound to me. Very clear and deep, with a little bite on the high end.

A vote for unfinished body.

After more thought I think I’m going with an oil finish because i love the feel. No guard because I honestly just don’t feel like making/finding one that fits. I’m definitely going black hardware.

What's the status? Did you get all your parts yet?

Parts are all here! My girlfriend bought me the neck for my birthday and I got a set of Riffblasters at the Converge show a couple of weeks ago. Body came with sanding sealer on it, so a stain/unfinished is out of the cards. I’m debating between transparent black or walnut currently and waiting until it warms up/I have a day off to shoot finish. I’m sticking with nitro matte on the body, no finish on the neck. All black hardware either way, volume/tone with amp knobs.
