equivalent of white noise for magnetic pickups?

Wed Feb 08, 2017 10:56 am

Hi.

I'd like to have a way to measure tonal characteristics of pickups while eliminating as many variables as possible - like the guitar and strings for example.
Is there a way to create a measuring signal akin to white noise for a magnetic pickup?

thanks

Very interesting. Could you use an electric screwdriver or drill to disrupt the pickups' magnetic field? Or to twirl a thin piece of steel over the pickups at a uniform height?

How are you measuring the output of the pickups to capture the tonal information? On a scope?

hey kosta,
yes I was also thinking of a drill or something with a electric motor :)

I would record the output and use a frequency analyser to visualise it like this:

I'm into it. I wonder if a small, exposed electric motor would generate enough of an electric pulse to function as a "tone generator" of sorts. Thinking of the type of small motor that might be found in a slot car or something.

Interesting thread on the Seymour Duncan forums: http://www.seymourduncan.com/forum/show ... y-analysis

Ideally, you want to use a sin sine wave frequency sweep rather than white noise for frequency response testing. Maybe that would be easier to reproduce than white noise.

Bring on the waves of sin. :D
