PoS p bass project

So on Sunday I went to a guitar show where I bought a cool acoustic but was also tempted by the brilliant colour and low price of this!

32" scale p bass ripoff, plays OK-ish (for £50, not like, actually well ) but as you may be able to see from this first pic it's going fretless because I want a passive fretless and the frets on this neck are garbage.

Planning to clean it up, put on a new guard, sand the neck down a bit and put a coating on it because I don't like how it feels.

Once I get that done and set up right so it plays OK I'll think about changing out the electronics.

Aiming to end up with a nice bass I'll actually want to play for probably about as much as a decent squier would cost in the first place plus hours of work. Lol but it will be fun, it's my first big instrument project.

Intending to update this thread as I make progress and to ask for advice if I need any!

Suggestions for extra fun are welcome, I tend to like simple instruments but all wacky ideas will be at least considered.

Any input on pickguard colour? I was initially thinking gold anodized but it looks like they cost nearly much as or more than the bass... So tortoiseshell is my second thought.

The obvious answer is purple for the pick guard.

I would wire it straight to the Jack. No volume. No tone.

Fretless instruments seem to be very forgiving on setup, and really show how well or poor a player you are. That's why I don't do fretless haha

Nice. I have actually followed that in buying black hardware which I think will look dope. Went for a red tort guard. Already spent more on hardware than the bass.

Yeah, I usually don't like black hardware. Totally works on a bass like that though. Can't wait to see how yours turns out. :snax:

Progress pic dump!

Fret filler drying:

Taking a break (Hibiki is delicious):

Masking tape off and beginning sanding:

Getting there with the sanding... Witness the scars from my brutal and indelicate fret removal

All sanded down, varnished and a coat of epoxy is drying on the neck at the moment.

I think the pickguard colour worked out great, but don't look too close because filing it to fit got messy.

It pinks nicely. Too bad it's not more of a coral pink though like I Initially thought it was from the snaps

Finished! Sort of.

It plays OK, nowhere near as nice as my real fretless but that was expected. Need a bit more work levelling the fingerboard to remove buzz on a few notes. Looks hawt though lol

I have a P/J bass that I bought for 50€. A refin and fretlessing it would be a fun project. To bad I actually suck on bass so it'l probably sound like shit, but it'll look cool
