This is a bump to tell you about a setting I like:

Fuzz (or perhaps two fuzzes) into Xero DLX into flanger (quite possibly):

slow, 4 pole, up

Res, Sens & Filter Vol.: all at noon
Freq: 9:00
Clean: 3:00

cock expression pedal to taste
(That's what she said.)

Oh, and I found this:

I am back on board with a Xero D. It has been awhile since I have had one. I actually have a decent amount of Iron Ether again (Xero D, Fantabit, QF2 copper). I am thinking about an Oxide again too. Now if Taylor would only finish that Squarewave Ocatver thingamajig.

Could you approximate that guitar sound that Pure X use in almost every song with this pedal?

Yeah, possibly.

Not with this pedal alone though. He's got a lot going on in terms of effects. Xerograph Deluxe could certainly be part of it.

What kind of combination does he use? It's not a guitar sound I've really heard before.

Sounds like a cross between Cocteau Twins and The Jesus and Mary Chain.

Saturated fuzz, feedback, echo, delay, wah wah (or some other kind of filter), flanger, volume swells, etc., etc.

What impresses me about the weird oscillations he's able to get is that they seem unpredictable yet controlled. When I saw them live he was using a tabletop device and was able to just strum a single chord which would then be followed by waves of filtered feedback. He didn't seem to be using a wah or doing anything manually.

Well, the Xerograph Deluxe does do the auto wah/envelope follower thing and you could set the resonance high enough for it to feedback. It's a very versatile pedal.

I cant guarantee that you'd be able to recreate the specific sounds you're looking for.

You could always just e-mail the dude and ask him what he's using.

That's a pedal I should try one of theses days.

You wanna borrow mine, syl?

(It's not getting used as much as it should. I'm actually thinking about selling it to fund a Starlight DLX.)

Thanks Chank... but I'm broke at the moment.
And next thing I want is a second guitar, so this is for later.

Oh, no, I wasn't suggesting that you buy it from me, syl.

You can just borrow it if you want. Just so you can try it out. I'll put it up for sale after you borrow it.

Heh, I'm not that bothered about replicating his guitar sound, I think it would get irritating after awhile!

OK, so I finally got my third Xero. Yes, THIRD!! First, non-DLX, is for manual filter sweeps with expression pedal (awesome bass wah before dirt, btw). Second, old pre-DLX version, is for deep envelope sounds, more or less regular auto-wah. And the third one, the DLX, is for craziness with cranked resonance on the edge of self-oscillation, with clean sound added to taste. And don't forget to add delay BEFORE it :!!!:
