Help Me Choose New Pickups

Postby Reverb92 » Sat Nov 26, 2016 8:55 pm

Hello everyone. :hello: I'll try to keep this simple.

I have a Les Paul-style guitar (mahogany body & neck, rosewood fretboard, etc.) The bridge pickup is scooped and gets muddy with distortion, and it's also very high output. I want to swap it out for something else. I mainly play shoegaze, indie rock and jazz (I also like dabble in hard rock and hardcore in alternate tunings at home, but it's not a priority) I need something low-mid output that gives me bright cleans, and doesn't mudden up when running dirt pedals. I like the sound of single-coils better than humbuckers. I'd something that sounds somewhere in-between: single-coil highs but with some bottom end, sort of how Jazzmasters sound. I use a Fingerprint fuzz and an Algal Bloom from ILF's very own Penny Pedals and FuzzHugger. I have a Seymour Duncan '59 on the neck. My budget is anything off GFS. I currently have an order for a Dream 90 pickup, but I'm not 100% sure it will suit my needs.

As a sidenote, I'm planning on picking up a Jazzmaster on the near future, but until then, I have to do with this one guitar. :idk:

Put a single coil in it.

P90s are pretty good, I've haven't heard a P90 that wasn't middy and naturally gritty. Also lipstick pickups have a sparkle and chime and usually low output.
Check out a TV Jones style pickup.

I replaced a Gibson 57 classic with a GFS Surf 90 in the neck of my les paulish guitar and it basically opened up the sound a lot. Higher highs and lower lows without sounding scooped. Basically just a better sound all around.

Yep, from what you said, a P90 is what you are looking for. I tried the Dream 90 many years ago and didn't gel with it though, it felt like a tamed down P90.

Great, a P90 it is. I did take a look at the Mean 90 because it's much closer to a P90 or so I've read. They currently aren't selling regular solder versions so ultimately I went with the Dream 90.

That's much expensive than I was looking for, however it seems interesting enough for me to consider. Do you have any audio clips?

Get those conversion plates and do this. Singles are usually cheaper than humbuckersized stuff, so I'd say get a nice single coil for the neck, like a BLK TRI BKS (http://www.blktri.com/product/black-kni ... ellite-bks) or something and then a humbucker for the bridge. So much win

Before you buy new pickups try a higher value volume pot. I love how 1meg pots open up muddy pickups.

Late to this thread but for minimal futzing, Lollar low-wind Imperials would probably suit you very well. Beautiful pickups.
