Help!? should I buy this guitar or will it fall apart!

Postby bedtime_ » Wed Aug 17, 2016 11:00 am

I've always wanted a "the paul" in this finish but I'm worried about its condition...

I can't see it. I must "log in to continue" and since I don't have an account that's unpossible.

If you could post a photo here, I could give you an opinion.

Any chance to get pictures that don't require a facebook profile?

Edit: Chankgeez beat me to it.

That crack is pretty bad...

1979 Gibson The Paul
$650
Thunder Bay, Ontario
Up for sale here is a 1979 Made in USA Gibson The Paul. All original parts aside from the neck pickup.
Grover machine heads
1979 T Top bridge pickup
Seymour Duncan '59 vintage neck pickup
Tune-o-matic bridge
Solid walnut body
Mahogany neck
The model was introduced as the precursor to the modern Les Paul Studio, features excellent hardware and electronics at the cost of a barebones finish. An excellent piece of Gibson history. Plays well, sounds killer, and feels completely badass. Blues, Metal, Rock, it can do it all. From John Lee Hooker through Clapton, Slash, and past Slayer, Sodom, and Testament, this guitar can do it.
The guitar has some seam seperation on the upper part of the body, a common problem with this era of Gibson guitars and this model specifically. It also has some wear on the first three frets, neglible difference in playing.
I will consider trades if presented with a decent offer. Preferably guitars, amps, or other music equipment. Pedals, Amps, Bass, Parts, you name it and I just may take it. No lowballs please

I'd be more concerned if it had a neck break, which it doesn't. Body crack/seam like that could probably get fixed with a little glue and some clamps/straps...and that would only be if it was a problem.

I'm just not sure of the overall value for these in general these days. Is that a good price? Is it worth hunting a little longer for "the one?"

I'd be less concerned about the body delaminating if it didn't cross through one of the bridge's mounting posts, and that will probably have to be taken care of at some point. The the neck/headstock seem to be in good shape, but at the price he's asking, it may be worth it to wait it out a bit. If this is the guitar, you could probably get one in better condition for not much more money.

Reverb's price guide places it between $750 and $1100, with sales over the past two years between $400 and $1050.

Yeah, that tailpiece is probably holding the guitar together.

At that price, I'd pass on it. It's gonna need some work and probably won't be worth it in the long run.

I'd pass, for $150 more, you could get a studio LP.

If you have a luthier buddy, both of you should check it out, and make sure the crack doesn't go through the body completely.

personally, I think it may be worth it although not at that price (maybe half that, AT BEST). even if it's solid, it won't be eventually - any crack will get worse with vibration. normal wear/tear is not a thing on that anymore.

that said, once it finally splits, i think you could probably do an interesting fix, which tingles certain nerves in my brain but isn't for everyone (i like unique fixes -- wabi sabi and all!).

it'd definitely be YOUR guitar. which is cool although a hassle.

Way high on the pricing.

Don't be suckered by "vintage" when it's in that shape unless it's at a substantial discount.

And yea, can get a new baseline studio for near that and put the cracks in yourself.

Dude, what about getting a body from the stratosphere, and putting in decent pickups that you'll versus the garbage they ship with lately.

Pickups are decent in the 2016s, they put the right pots in for once!

Good to know. I kinda walked away after their 2015 debacle of a product cycle...

Honestly I'm immensely happy with every aspect of my 2016, I even got the dreaded Robotuners. New ones do the job as advertised, the titanium stuff versus brass holds up, and it sounds good, period.

The DIP switch options for PU splitting and whatnot are huge as well.

Only potential downside (of the extreme high end stuff, $1500+) is the aluminum road case is heavy if that matters. It's a stupid nice case, but ...it ain't light.

You can get the 90's remake versions in better shape for less, I paid $500 for mine.
